Production of carbon soot with a high content of C60 and C70 fullerenes by electric arc

The effect of the parameters of the electric arc (helium pressure, current and voltage, clearance between electrodes) and of the peculiarities of the setup design (arrangement of electrodes, distance between the arc and the cooling surface, temperature of the soot condensation surface) on the yield of fullerenes has been studied. New ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystalline materials containing differing numbers of lactate units

A new series of chiral liquid crystalline materials having the same rigid core containing a keto group, and various numbers of ( S )-lactate groups in the chiral segment, has been synthesized and studied. All the compounds contain a branched terminal alkyl chain derived from ( S )-2-methylbutanol. The influence of the number of lactate units on mesogenic behaviour has been studied. All the compounds show the paraelectric SmA phase and the ferroelectric SmC * phase over rather wide temperature ranges. The antiferroelectric SmC * A phase was observed for the compound possessing two lactate groups.

EPR study of spin adducts of silyl and phosphonyl radicals with higher internal perfluoroalkenes

The EPR method was used to study the structure of spin adducts of silyl and phosphonyl radicals with higher internal perfluoroalkenes. The capacity for spin adducts to split off hydrogen atoms is determined by the degree of steric screening of the free radical center. The preparative photochemical reaction of hydrosilanes and dialkyl phosphites with perfluoro-4-methylpent-2-ene leads to regiospecific hydrosilylation and hydrophosphorylation products with yields up to 80%.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 5, pp. 1018–1023, May, 1991.

Stereoselective hydroboration of 5-dimethylaminomethyl-2-methyl-4,5-dihydrofuran: A simple way to (±)-muscarine
