A stereoselective synthesis of asymmetrically substituted calix[4]arenecarbamates

Calix[4]arenes bearing a methoxy and an R or S α-phenylethylacetamido group at the narrow rim of macrocycles are stereoselectively acylated with 1 equiv of trichloroacetyl isocyanate to give chiral asymmetrically substituted calix[4]arenecarbamates in preparative yields and high diastereomeric excess.     

K10Ga3Bi6.65 – The First Compound in the Ternary A-Ga-Bi System Comprising Cyclic Tris-meta Borate-Analogous [Ga3Bi6]9– Units and Bi2 Dumbbells

K₁₀Ga₃Bi_6.65 is the first representative in the ternary system A-Ga-Bi (A = alkali metal). It contains [Ga₃Bi₆]^9– anions with planar triangular-coordinated Ga atoms as the main structural feature, accompanied by isolated Bi–Bi dumbbells. Alkali metal cations are counterbalancing the charges and fill the space between the anionic units. According to the Zintl-Klemm concept charge balance is reached if an almost equal ratio of single and double-bonded Bi₂ dumbbells are present according to (K⁺)₁₀[Ga₃Bi₆]^9–([Bi-Bi]^4–)_1/6([Bi=Bi]^2–)_1/6.     

Experimental demonstration of a narrowband, angular tolerant, polarization independent, doubly periodic resonant grating filter

Resonant grating filters are promising components for free-space narrowband filtering. Unfortunately, due to their weak angular tolerance, their performances are strongly deteriorated when they are illuminated with a standard collimated beam. Yet this problem can be overcome by resorting to a complex periodic pattern known as the doubly periodic grating [Lemarchand et al., Opt. Lett.23, 1149 (1998)]. We report what we believe to be the first experimental fabrication and characterization of a bidimensional doubly periodic grating filter. We obtained a 0.5 nm bandpass polarization independent reflection filter for telecom wavelengths (1520-1570 nm) that presents a transmittivity minimum of 18% with a standard incident collimated beam.     

Addition Reactions of Benzenesulfinic Acid with Glycals and 1,2-Dibromosugars

The addition of benzenesulfinic acid to glycals was investigated under various conditions, and optimized yields of the glycosyl phenylsulfone products were obtained in the presence of tin tetrachloride as a catalyst. Double bond shift (Ferrier rearrangement) occurred in all cases except amicetal, which lacks a substituent at the allylic carbon. Glycosylation of benzenesulfinic acid with 1,2-dibromides was carried out using silver triflate as the promoter, and gave sulfinate esters as products by reaction at oxygen rather than at sulfur. The sulfinate esters were obtained as mixtures of stereoisomers at the stereogenic sulfur atom. Trapping of the sulfinates with carboxylate nucleophiles was observed during attempted oxidation with MCPBA.     

Synthesis of Glycosyl Azides by the Addition of Phenylselenenyl Azide to Glycals

Abstract

The addition of phenylselenenyl azide to glycals is carried out under conditions that give 2-deoxy-2-phenylselenoglycosyl azides. This regiochemistry is opposite to that obtained under free-radical conditions, which are known to produce 2-azido-2-deoxyselenoglycosides. The addition reaction is carried out with phenylselenenyl chloride and sodium azide in dimethylformamide, and is stereoselective for trans addition. Tri-O-benzyl-d-glucal and di-O-benzyl-l-rhamnal each gave two addition products, in which the phenylselenyl and azido groups were either trans diaxial or trans diequatorial. Tri-O-benzyl-d-galactal gave only the trans diaxial addition product.     

Waveformation during high-speed collision between a plate and a cone

The results of experimental studies of waveformation in a contact molten layer during an axial collision of metallic plates with metallic bodies in the form of truncated right circular cones are reported. A closed regular structure of the contact layer in the form of a series (train) of long waves is formed on the external surfaces of copper and aluminum cones. The results of measurements of the wavelength as a function of the group velocity fit into the ascending branch of the dispersion curve for the wave.     

Palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution assisted by 1,3,2-diazaphospholidine derivatives of (<Emphasis Type="Italic">R,R</Emphasis>)-<Emphasis Type="Italic">N</Emphasis>-naphthyltartarimide

P,P-Bidentate diamidophosphite ligands containing the (3R,4R)-3,4-dioxy-1-(1-naphthyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione framework and 1,3,2-diazaphospholidine rings with the stereogenic P atoms were obtained. The use of these ligands provides up to 85% ee in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric amination of (E)-1,3-diphenylallyl acetate and up to 95% ee in its asymmetric alkylation with dimethyl malonate.     

Composition, structure, and properties of pharmacologically active silicon dimethylglycerolates

¹H and ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopy showed that the product of the reaction of dimethyldiethoxysilane with glycerol in the molar ratio 1: 2 is an equilibrium mixture of dimethyldiglyceroxysilane and low-molecular-weight condensation products. The change of viscosity of silicon dimethylglycerolates, synthesized using different excesses of glycerol, versus time was studied by viscosimetry. Composition of products of hydrolysis and condensation of silicon dimethylglycerolates is determined by their concentration in the starting aqueous solutions.
