Synthesis,characterization, and molecular structures of Ni(II) and Cd(II) complexes derived from dithiophosphonate

Two novel dithiophosphonate ligands, HS₂P(p‐C₆H₄OMe)(OCH₂CH₂CH(CH₃)₂) ( 1 ) and HS₂P(p‐C₆H₄OMe)(OCH(CH₃)₂) ( 2 ), were synthesized and characterized by multinuclear (¹H, ³¹P, and ¹³C) NMR, infrared spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. The reactions of 1 and 2 with NiCl₂·6H₂O and Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O in methanol led to novel complexes 3 and 4 . The single crystal X‐ray structures of 3 and 4 showed tetracoordinated structure with square planar geometry for the nickel complex, while it showed pentacoordinated structure with distorted square‐pyramid environment for the cadmium complex.     

Multimaterial preform coextrusion for robust chalcogenide optical fibers and tapers

The development of robust infrared fibers is crucial for harnessing the capabilities of new mid-infrared lasers. We present a novel approach to the fabrication of chalcogenide glass fiber preforms: one-step multimaterial extrusion. The preform consists of a glass core and cladding surrounded by a built-in, thermally compatible, polymer jacket for mechanical support. Using this approach we extrude several preform structures and draw them into robust composite fibers. Furthermore, the polymer cladding allows us to produce robust tapers with submicrometer core diameter.

Fluorescent DNA chemosensors: identification of bacterial species by their volatile metabolites

Polyfluorophores built on a DNA scaffold (ODFs) were synthesized and tested for fluorescence responses to the volatiles from M. tuberculosis, E. coli and P. putida in closed Petri dishes. Two sensors in a pattern-based response could distinguish the bacterial strains accurately, suggesting the use of ODFs in rapid identification of infectious agents.

A novel proposal for DWDM demultiplexer design using modified-T photonic crystal structure

We propose an ultra compact structure to realize demultiplexing operation for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) communication systems using resonant cavity in modified-T Photonic Crystal (PC) structure. To the best of our knowledge, this is for the first time that a PC-based demultiplexer has been achieved with 1 nm channel spacing and 0.45 nm mean value of bandwidth without using either specific materials or complexities in fabrication process. Designs offering improvement of channel spacing and bandwidth of the proposed demultiplexer is our aim in this work. The attained characteristics are approximately in the range of the DWDM communication systems. Accurate resonant cavities have been used in terms of location and size of holes in the proposed structure in order for them to capture desired wavelengths in optical telecommunication range. Our simulations indicate the average amount of crosstalk (Xt) and the average quality factor (Q) to be ?21.1 dB and 3488, respectively. Two-dimensional (2D) Finite-Difference-Time-Domain (FDTD) is chosen for simulation of the proposed structure. The footprint of the structure is approximately 536 μm² and can be fabricated and integrated densely and easily.     

Engineering the Stereochemistry of Cephalosporin for Specific Detection of Pathogenic Carbapenemase‐Expressing Bacteria

Reported herein is the design of fluorogenic probes specific for carbapenem‐resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and they were designed based on stereochemically modified cephalosporin having a 6,7‐trans configuration. Through experiments using recombinant β‐lactamase enzymes and live bacterial species, these probes demonstrate the potential for use in the specific detection of carbapenemases, including metallo‐β‐lactamases in active bacterial pathogens.
