Préparation,configuration et réduction électrochimique d'α-cyano β-nitrostyrènes. Synthèse d'amino-5 isoxazoles

Z α-Cyano-β-nitrostyrenes were prepared by nitration with dinitrogentetroxide of the corresponding α-cyanostyrenes. Elsomers were obtained by photoirradiation of Z isomers. The electrochemical reduction of these cyanonitro compounds generates the α-cyanooximes which lead, according to the experimental conditions(ring closure or hydrolysis), either to 5-aminoisoxazoles or to β-ketonitriles.     

Direct observation of the protonation state of an imino sugar glycosidase inhibitor upon binding

Glycosidases are some of the most ubiquitous enzyme in nature. Their biological significance, coupled to their enormous catalytic prowess derived from tight binding of the transition state, is reflected in their importance as therapeutic targets. Many glycosidase inhibitors are known. Imino sugars are often potent inhibitors, yet many facets of their mode of action, such as their degree, if any, of transition-state "mimicry" and their protonation state when bound to the target glycosidase remain unclear. Atomic resolution analysis of the endoglucanase, Cel5A, in complex with a cellobio-derived isofagomine in conjunction with the pH dependence of Ki and kcat/KM reveals that this compound binds as a protonated sugar. Surprisingly, both the enzymatic nucleophile and the acid/base are unprotonated in the complex.     

Préparation d'isoxazoles trisubstitués par réduction chimique et électrochimique d'α-acyl β-nitrostilbènes

Nitration of α-acylstilbenes with dinitrogen tetroxide leads to corresponding Z-α-acyl-β-nitrostilbenes. By chemical or electochemical reduction of these compounds, trisubstituted isoxazoles were prepared in good yields.     

Elastic π±-d and π±-4He scattering below 70 MeV

Elastic scattering differential cross section data of ^± d at 65 MeV and ^{± 4}He at 51 MeV are presented and compared respectively to fully relativistic 3-body and optical potential calculations including true pion absorption.Presented at the symposium Mesons and Light Nuclei, Liblice, Czechoslovakia, June 1981.     

Infrared (1.2-1.6 microm) luminescence in Cr4+:Yb3Al5O12 single crystal with 940 nm diode pumping

Infrared (1.2-1.6 microm) luminescence in a ytterbium aluminium garnet (YbAG) crystal, doped with Cr (0.05at.%) ions, was investigated under CW laser diode pumping (lambda=940 nm). The Cr4+ emission band was observed with its peak at 1.34 microm and measured to be about 1.3 times with respect to Yb3+ IR luminescence (lambda=1.03 microm). We demonstrate that for the excitation wavelength of 940 nm Yb3+ ions act as sensitizers of the 3B2(3T2)-3B1(3A2) emission of Cr4+ ions. This crystal is promising as a high-efficient system for tunable laser (1.2-1.6 microm) output.     

Some characterizations of unimodal distribution functions

Let F be a distribution function and let Q _F(l)=0 for l<0 and Q _F(l)= sup {F(x+l)–F(x): x} for l0 be its Lévy concentration function. This paper has two purposes: to give a characterization of unimodal distribution functions (Theorem 3.5) and a representation theorem for the class of unimodal distribution functions (Theorem 6.2), both in terms of their Lévy concentration functions.Work supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Canada Grants A-7339 and A-7223, by the Québec Action Concertée Grant ER-1023, and by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft     

Elution of 235U fission products through a calcined hydrotalcite-packed column

Calcined hydrotalcite packed columns were utilized to sorb ²³⁵U fission products and their decay products. The elution behavior of some radionuclides was studied after washing the columns, either with distilled water or 0.5% NaCl solution. Afterwards, fission products and their decay products were eluted using 0.5% NaCl solution. It was found that no matter the washing process, ^99mTc, the b^--decay product of ⁹⁹Mo, was easily separated from ⁹⁹Mo which was strongly retained on the hydrotalcite. ¹³²I, the b^--decay product of ¹³²Te, was eluted slowly and was separated from ¹³²Te which was retained on the column. ¹³¹I and ¹⁴⁰Ba were eluted together with ^99mTc and ¹³²I, although in smaller proportions.     

Preparation of diverse BODIPY diesters

The synthesis and properties of a variety of substituted BODIPY diesters is presented. We find that certain substitution patterns afford appreciable yields of the target compounds and that electronic effects result in predicable differential fluorescent behavior. Challenges to further water solubilize these dyes and/or provide new points of attachment for biological tagging remain, these strategies are discussed.     

High resolution spectroscopy of (lambda)(12)B by electroproduction

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in hall A at Jefferson Lab on a 12C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a ring imaging Cherenkov detector were added to the hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed (Lambda)(12)B spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state s-wave Lambda peak and the 11 MeV p-wave Lambda peak.
