Extraordinary ray refraction in a large pitch helical medium

The phenomenon of extraordinary ray refraction in a helical liquid crystal with large (compared to the light wavelength) pitch has been studied by theoretical and experimental methods. At a sufficiently large angle of incidence relative to the pitch axis, the extraordinary ray exhibits reflection (reversal) from a certain layer of the medium. The ordinary ray, for which the system is optically isotropic, exhibits no such reflection. The experimental dependences of the transmitted and reflected (reversed) rays are described using the geometrical optics approximation taking into account the optical losses for scattering inside the liquid crystal.     

Phase Transitions,Thermal Desorption of Gases,and Electroconduction in BaCeO<Subscript>3</Subscript>, a Base for High-Temperature Protonic Conductors

Investigations of phase transitions in barium cerate are carried out by methods of dilatometry and differential scanning calorimetry. Thermal desorption of gases and temperature dependences of electroconduction in dry and humid air are studied. Barium cerate exhibits complex polymorphism, undergoing a number of structural conversions at 300– 1300 K. The peaks in the spectra of thermal desorption of CO₂ and H₂O correlate with variations in the crystal lattice. Investigations in the region of 2,3′-biquinolyl 4. Alkylation of the dianion of 2,3′-biquinolyl

With alkyl chlorides and alkyl phenyl ethers the dianion of 2,3-biquinolyl forms the products from alkylation at position 4. Catalytic Activity of Complex-Oxide Perovskite-containing Compositions in Reactions of Oxidation of CO and Organic Compounds

The catalytic activity of composites constituted by a porous metallic or ceramic support, intermediate layers of oxide nature, and perovskite coatings, including those doped with silver, was studied in reactions of deep oxidation of CO and organic compounds of various classes. The relationship between the catalytic activity of a composite and its composition and nature of substances being oxidized was analyzed.     

Phase Equilibria and Crystal Structure of Complex Oxides in the La–Sr–Co–Ni– System

Phase equilibria in the La–Sr–Co–Ni–O system were studied in air at 1100°. The samples for the study were synthesized by the standard ceramic and citrate processes. The limiting solubility and structure of La_1-xSr_xCo_1-yNi_yO_3- and (La_1-xSr_x)₂Co_1-yNi_yO₄ solid solutions were determined by Xray powder diffraction analysis. La_1-xSr_xCo_1-yNi_yO₃- solid solutions with 0 x 0.5 have a distorted rhombohedral perovskitelike structure (R c space group). An increase in the strontium concentration reduces the rhombohedral distortions, and the compounds with x < 0.5 have an ideal cubic structure (Pm3m space group). (La_1-xSr_x)₂Co_1-yNi_yO₄ crystals have a tetragonal K₂NiF₄ type unit cell (I4/mmm space group). The relationships between unit cell parameters and compositions were obtained for singlephase La_1-xSr_xCo_1-yNi_yO_3- and (La_1-xSr_x)₂Co_1-yNi_yO₄ samples. The existence regions of La_1-xSr_xCo_1-yNi_yO₃- and La_1-xSr_x)₂Co_1-yNi_yO₄ solid solutions were distinguished on P–T phase diagrams.     

Studies in the area of 2,3′-biquinolyl. 1. Arylation and hetarylation of 2,3′-biquinolyl dianion

The 2,3-biquinolyl dianion, when reacting with aryl- and hetaryl halides, forms arylation products at the 4 position, and treatment of these products with alkyl halides or water yields 1-alkyl-4-aryl-1,4-dihydro-2,3-biquinolyls or 4-aryl-1,4-dihydro-2,3-biquinolyls, respectively. Oxidation of the latter yields 4-aryl-2,3-biquinolyls. The cation dependence of the arylation reaction is demonstrated.Stavropol' State University, Stavropol' 355009.
