Several studies have reported prevalence rates for voice disorders in school-aged children. Less is known, however, about such prevalence in preschoolers, and whether racial, ethnic, or cultural diversity may influence it. The presence of voice disorders in a total of 2445 African-American and European-American preschool children, 1246 males and 1199 females, from 2 to 6 years of age is reported here. Presence of a voice disorder characterized by hoarseness was identified by a three-prong approach including teacher identification, investigator screening, and parent identification. Speech-language pathologists listened individually to each child's speech as they engaged each child in play-conversation activities. A voice disorder was identified on the basis of the judgment of two speech-language pathologists. Voice disorders characterized by hoarseness were identified in 95 children or 3.9% of the total sample by the investigators. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences for age, gender, or race.  相似文献

The application of HPLC-NMR for the analysis of a mixture of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAEs) is described. The use of the new generation, cryogenically cooled probes is investigated in respect of the sensitivity advantage that they provide. The FAE mixture is separated using liquid chromatography at the critical point of adsorption. The ability of the method to differentiate between the different end groups and the degree of polymerization of the mixture constituents is investigated. Both on-flow and stop-flow HPLC-NMR techniques were used together with two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The results are compared with those obtained by using an evaporative light scattering detector for the HPLC.  相似文献

Reaction between quinolinquinone and thiazolidine in basic medium was investigated. 2-Arylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid ethyl esters undergo two different cleavages in basic medium, yielding the 1-aryl-2-azadiene and a thiolic species. In the presence of quinolinquinone, the isomeric 1-aryl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-pyridoisoquinolin-5,10-diones and 3-amino-3-ethoxycarbonyl-dihydrothienoquinolin-4,9-diones are formed by a hetero-Diels-Alder reaction and 1,4-Michael addition reaction, respectively. A mechanism for the formation of the reaction products is presented.  相似文献

The biogenesis of aglajnes, polypropionate allomones of the cephalaspidean mollusc Bulla striata, has been investigated in vivo by feeding experiments. Incorporation of the committed precursor, [1-14C]-propionate, into aglajne-1 (1) and -3 (3) established the de novo origin of these compounds in B. striata. In the letter we also discuss briefly the ecological meaning of the origin of polypropionates in B. striata and in other cephalaspidean molluscs.  相似文献

A previously developed molecular level model for lipid bilayers [G. Brannigan and F. L. H. Brown, J. Chem. Phys. 120, 1059 (2004)] is extended to allow for variations in lipid length and simulations under constant surface tension conditions. The dependence of membrane elasticity on bilayer thickness is obtained by adjusting lipid length at constant temperature and surface tension. Additionally, bilayer fluidity at various lipid lengths is quantified by analysis of a length versus temperature phase diagram at vanishing tension. Regions of solid, gel-like (hexatic) and fluid bilayer behavior are established by identification of phase boundaries. The main melting transition is found to be density driven; the melting temperature scales inversely with lipid length since thermal expansion increases with lipid aspect ratio.  相似文献

Two methods of determining trace levels of platinum and gold in aqueous solutions with high concents of total dissolved solids were investigated. The first involves preconcentration and separation of the precious metals from the interfering matrix by solvent extraction, followed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) with Zeeman effect background correction. The direct determination of Pt and Au in solutions of high ionic strength by GFAAS is not desirable because of interference between elements in the matrix and the analyte, increased imprecision of analysis, greatly increased background absorbance leading to increased detection limits and rapid deterioration of the graphite tube. All the extraction methods for gold examined in this study resulted in decreased imprecision, increased sensitivity and lower background absorbance compared with direct measurements on the aqueous solution. All techniques also exhibited good recoveries (> 8%) and reproducibilities (relative standard deviation < 10%). The highest sensitivities for gold extraction from distilled water were obtained for dibutyl sulfide (DBS)—toluene and the lowest for cyanide—dibutyl ketone. The degree of extraction of Au was, however, dependent on the composition of the solution, indicating that standard and sample matrices should be closely matched even when employing solvent extraction. Solvent extraction was generally less successful for Pt. In order to obtain an acceptable imprecision in the Pt extractions, it was found that the use of SnCl2 as a labilizing agent is essential for most of the techniques investigated.The second method was direct measurement by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP—MS). ICP—MS offers the advantages of a very low detection limit (100 ng l?1 or better) without preconcentration and a large dynamic range. However, severe matrix effects can occur in concentrated solutions. Whereas high concentrations in solution of both sodium perchlorate and sodium chloride decrease the sensitivity, the presence of sulfide and natural organic (fulvic) acid increase the sensitivity for Pt and Au by a factor of up to 4. Sulfate, on the other hand, decreases the sensitivity of ICP-MS for Pt. The method of standard additions or isotope dilution is recommended for routine use to circumvent this problem, especially when the nature of the matrix is unknown or cannot be easily matched in the standards.  相似文献
