Measurement of the $b\overline{b}$ production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions

Using the HERA - B detector, the production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into by exploiting the longitudinal separation of decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e ⁺ e ^- and channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section . Test of pulse shape analysis using single Compton scattering events

Procedures developed to separate single- and multiple-site events in germanium detector are tested with specially selected event samples provided by an 18-fold segmented prototype germanium detector for phase II of the germanium detector array, GERDA. The single Compton scattering, i.e. single-site, events are tagged by coincidently detecting the scattered photon with a second detector positioned at a defined angle. A neural network is trained to separate such events from events which come from multi-site dominated samples. Identification efficiencies of ≈80% are achieved for both single- and multi-site events. A1 g phonons in YBa2Cu3O7 by first-principles atomic-force calculations

We report on ab-initio frozen-phonon calculations for the five A_1g Raman-active-modes of YBa₂Cu₃O₇ atq=0. The determination of the equilibrium positions of the atoms Ba, Cu(2), O(2), O(3), O(4) as well as of phonon frequencies and respective eigenvectors is based on the calculation of atomic forces within the LAPW-method. The general agreement between our results and experimental structural data and phonon frequencies is good. Deviations are discussed in connection with the local-density approximation.     

Synthesis of new 3'-, 5-, and N(4)-modified 2'-O-methylcytidine libraries on solid support

A versatile solid phase combinatorial approach was developed and utilized for the rapid synthesis of new 2'-O-methylcytidine nucleoside libraries 1-7 containing 672 compounds with 3'-deoxy-3'-C-methyl, 3'-deoxy-3'-C-hydroxymethyl, and 5-alkyl/alkynyl modifications. The modified uridine scaffolds 8-10, 23-25, and 31 were loaded onto the 4-methoxytrityl chloride (MMT-Cl) polystyrene resin through the hydroxyl groups at the 5'-position as well as on the substituents at the 3'- and 5-positions. The scaffolds loaded on the resin were orthogonally protected by MMT group on the resin itself and TBDMS or acetyl protecting groups. The 4-position of the uridine derivatives was activated by 2,4,6-triisopropyl benzene sulfonyl chloride for further derivatization. The resins 14-16, 28-30, and 32 loaded with the corresponding activated scaffolds were reacted with the selected and validated amino building blocks in the 96 well format on the semiautomated synthesizer. The high-quality 2'-O-methylcytidine libraries 1-7 were thus generated and characterized by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis with 63-99% successful rates.     

Experimental results on neutrino-electron scattering

A determination of sin² θ _w based on measurements of elastic scattering of muon-neutrinos and muon-anti-neutrinos on atomic electrons is described. These purely leptonic processes were studied using the CHARM calorimeter exposed to neutrino and antineutrino wide-band beams at the CERN super proton synchrotron. A total of 83±16 neutrino-electron and 112±21 antineutrino-electron events have been detected. From the measurement of the ratio of muon-neutrino and muon-antineutrino cross-sections a value of sin² θ _w =0.211±0.037 was obtained.
