Because of the relative smallness of each basin (mostly smaller than 3000 km~2), less attention hasbeen paid to the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous fault basins in Northeast China. However, the discovery oflarge coal deposits and oil in commercial quantities in the last ten years shows that these basins are greatpotential sources of energy. A vast basin system, the Northeast Asia Fault Basin System, consisting ofmore than 100 late Mesozoic fault basins has now been recognized. In addition, there are many othercontemporaneous basins in the east of the People's Republic of Mongolia and in the region east of LakeBaikal. They may be half grabens, grabens, and compound fault basins made up of a number of sub-basins, all belonging to the same basin system with a clear zonation. The direction, geometry and distri-bution of the basins were determined by the pre-existing fault network and the tectonic stress field. Dur-ing an earlier dextral tenso-shear phase, most of the basins followed NE and NNE pre-existing f 相似文献
