A mathematical model for the input-output functions of the hearing aids is presented. The model, basically a sine-series function, can easily yield closed-form expressions for the amplitudes of the harmonic and intermodulation components of the output when the input is formed of multitone large sound pressure levels. The special case of two-tone equal-amplitude incident pressure level is considered in detail. The results show that the third-order intermodulation component is always higher than the third-harmonic component. The results also show that the input-output functions exhibiting peak clipping exhibit the worst harmonic and intermodulation performance for large sound pressure levels. The simple wide-dynamic range compression (WDRC) input-output function exhibits the best harmonic and intermodulation distortion performance under large sound pressure levels. These results are consistent with the previously reported observations and reveal that there is a correlation between intelligibility of high-level speech and the harmonic and intermodulation performance of the hearing aid under large sound pressure levels.  相似文献

It has been demonstrated that the Filtered-x Wilcoxon LMS (FxWLMS) based adaptive filter mitigates the effect of the outliers acquired by the microphone signal of hearing aids by minimizing the Wilcoxon norm and hence shows better cancellation performance than the existing Filtered-x LMS (FxLMS) algorithm. The prediction error method based adaptive feedback canceller (PEMAFC) reduces the bias present in the estimate of the feedback path due to the continuous adaptive filtering (CAF). However, the impulse response of the measured feedback path is close to zero for the first many samples due to the delay introduced by ADC converters and then contains few significant values, which results in slow convergence rate when an adaptive filter is used to model the same. To overcome this limitation, we propose a proportionate normalized WLMS (PNWLMS) algorithm based PEMAFC (P-PNWLMS) for feedback cancellation in hearing aid in the presence of outliers. Further, with an objective to improve the convergence rate and performance accuracy simultaneously, this paper proposes a novel convex PNWLMS (CPNWLMS) algorithm which incorporates convex combination of PNWLMS and WLMS algorithms. The weight update equations are derived for PEMAFC trained by PNWLMS (P-PNWLMS) and CPNWLMS (P-CPNWLMS) algorithms respectively. The results of the simulation study show improved performance of the proposed CPNWLMS based adaptive filter over its component filters.  相似文献

This paper proposes an objective measurement methodology to assess the sound transmission paths through various earmuff components (cup, cushion, back-plate, foam insert, silicone flesh) and estimate the vibroacoustic couplings between them. The measurement methodology is applied to two different commercial earmuffs. For each Hearing Protection Device (HPD), the different sound paths are assessed, by analyzing separately the vibroacoustic behavior of each HPD component. In particular, the Insertion Loss (IL) of the lateral walls of the cushion is assessed, with and without pumping motion. The effect of the coupling between the different parts is also investigated from the comparison of the separate components with the complete earmuff. As shown in past studies, results confirm that the acoustical behavior of an earmuff is governed by the pumping motion and air leaks at low frequency and by the sound path through the cup and the cavity resonances at high frequency. However, at mid frequency, new counter-intuitive results are revealed. It is found that earmuffs do not behave as their weakest element, but rather as the one which has the highest attenuation. It is also observed that the foam insert can also decrease the IL. Complementary tests using other absorbing materials show that this effect could mainly be attributed to the absorption behaviors of each material at medium frequencies.  相似文献

Noise is an undesired sound that cannot be ignored. Hearing loss caused by industrial noise has been recognized for many years, and protection of employee hearing has been made mandatory by governmental agencies. This paper presents an investigation of ongoing hearing conservation programs (HCP) in selected metal fabrication industries in the state of Tennessee and the effects of these programs on employees’ health and safety. A questionnaire has been used to collect data for this study. The questionnaire was send to 65 metal fabrication industries (MFI) which have populations of over 100 employees. The response rate was 70.77%. The majority of industries surveyed had noise problems in their plants. Hearing conservation programs are a necessity to protect employees’ health and safety in metal fabrication industries in Tennessee.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of hearing protection devices (HPDs) on the understanding of speech in young adults with normal hearing, both in a silent situation and in the presence of ambient noise. The experimental research was carried out with the following variables: five different conditions of HPD use (without protectors, with two earplugs and with two earmuffs); a type of noise (pink noise); 4 test levels (60, 70, 80 and 90 dB[A]); 6 signal/noise ratios (without noise, +5, +10, zero, −5 and −10 dB); 5 repetitions for each case, totalling 600 tests with 10 monosyllables in each one. The variable measure was the percentage of correctly heard words (monosyllabic) in the test. The results revealed that, at the lowest levels (60 and 70 dB), the protectors reduced the intelligibility of speech (compared to the tests without protectors) while, in the presence of ambient noise levels of 80 and 90 dB and unfavourable signal/noise ratios (0, −5 and −10 dB), the HPDs improved the intelligibility. A comparison of the effectiveness of earplugs versus earmuffs showed that the former offer greater efficiency in respect to the recognition of speech, providing a 30% improvement over situations in which no protection is used. As might be expected, this study confirmed that the protectors' influence on speech intelligibility is related directly to the spectral curve of the protector's attenuation.  相似文献

The vocalizations of seven normally hearing (NH) and seven severely hearing-impaired (HI) infants were compared to find out the influence of auditory feedback on preverbal utterances. It was tested whether there are general differences in vocalizations between NH and HI infants, and whether specific emotional states affect the vocal production of NH and HI infants in the same way. First, the acoustic structure of the three most common vocal types was analyzed; second, the composition of vocal sequences was examined. Vocal sequence composition turned out to be more affected by hearing impairment than the acoustic structure of single vocalizations. This result indicates that the acoustic structure of preverbal vocalizations is to a great extent predetermined, whereas the composition of vocal sequences is influenced by auditory input.  相似文献
