Reactivity of Diarylnitrenium Ions

Hydride abstraction from diarylamines with the trityl ion is explored in an attempt to generate a stable diarylnitrenium ion, Ar₂N⁺. Sequential H-atom abstraction reactions ensue. The first H-atom abstraction leads to intensely colored aminium radical cations, Ar₂NH^.+, some of which are quite stable. However, most undergo a second H-atom abstraction leading to ammonium ions, Ar₂NH₂⁺. In the absence of a ready source of H-atoms, a unique self-abstraction reaction occurs when Ar=Me₅C₆, leading to a novel iminium radical cation, Ar=N^.+Ar, which decays via a second self H-atom abstraction reaction to give a stable iminium ion, Ar=N⁺HAr. These products differ substantially from those derived via photochemically produced diarylnitrenium ions.     

On a sufficient condition for a Fano manifold to be covered by rational N-folds

In this paper, we prove a conjecture by T. Suzuki, which says if a smooth Fano manifold satisfies some positivity condition on its Chern characters, then it can be covered by rational N-folds. We prove this conjecture by using purely combinatorial properties of Bernoulli numbers.

Metal-Mediated Directional Capping of Rod-Packing Metal–Organic Frameworks

Two new rod-packing metal–organic frameworks (RPMOF) are constructed by regulating the in situ formation of the capping agent. In CPM-s7, carboxylate linkers extend 1D manganese-oxide chains in four additional directions, forming 3D RPMOF. The substitution of Mn²⁺ with a stronger Lewis acidic Co²⁺, leads to an acceleration of the hydrolysis-prone sulfonate linker, resulting in presence of sulfate ions to reduce two out of the four carboxylate-extending directions, and thus forming a new 2D rod-packing CPM-s8. Density functional theory calculations and magnetization measurements reveal ferrimagnetic ordering of CPM-s8, signifying the potential of exploring 2D RPMOF for effective low-dimensional magnetic materials.
