Estimates for eigenvalues of stochastic matrices

It is well-known that the eigenvalues of stochastic matrices lie in the unit circle and at least one of them has the value one. Let {1, r 2 , ··· , r N } be the eigenvalues of stochastic matrix X of size N × N . We will present in this paper a simple necessary and sufficient condition for X such that |r j | < 1, j = 2, ··· , N . Moreover, such condition can be very quickly examined by using some search algorithms from graph theory.

Lower bounds for the maximal Lyapunov exponent

Upper bounds for the maximal Lyapunov exponent,E, of a sequence of matrix-valued random variables are easy to come by asE is the infimum of a real-valued sequence. We shall show that under irreducibility conditions similar to those needed to prove the Perron-Frobenius theorem, one can find sequences which increase toE. As a byproduct of the proof we shall see that we may replace the matrix norm with the spectral radius when computingE in such cases. Finally, a sufficient condition for transience of random walk in a random environment is given.

Bounds for the Perron root, singularity/nonsingularity conditions, and eigenvalue inclusion sets

Using a unified approach based on the monotonicity property of the Perron root and its circuit extension, a series of exact two-sided bounds for the Perron root of a nonnegative matrix in terms of paths in the associated directed graph is obtained. A method for deriving the so-called mixed upper bounds is suggested. Based on the upper bounds for the Perron root, new diagonal dominance type conditions for matrices are introduced. The singularity/nonsingularity problem for matrices satisfying such conditions is analyzed, and the associated eigenvalue inclusion sets are presented. In particular, a bridge connecting Gerschgorin disks with Brualdi eigenvalue inclusion sets is found. Extensions to matrices partitioned into blocks are proposed.

恰含一个圈的简单连通图称为单圈图。Cn记n个顶点的圈。△（i,j,κ）记C3的三个顶点上分别接出i,j,κ条悬挂边所得的图，其中i≥j≥κ≥0.Sl^n-l记Cl的某一顶点上接出n-l条悬挂边所得到的图。△（n-4 1,0,0)记△（n-4,0,0)的某个悬挂点上接出一条悬挂边所得到的图。本文证明了：若把所有n(n≥12）阶单圈图按其最大特征值从大到小的顺序排列，则排在前六位的依次是S3^n-3，△（n-4,1,0),△（n-4 1,0,0),S4^n-4,△（n-5,2,0),△（n-5,1,1)。     

树的Nordhaus-Gaddum类型谱半径的排序

给出了n阶树的Nordhaus-Gaddum类型谱半径即图及其补图的谱半径之和的可达上界:ρ(T) ρ(Tc)≤■ n-2,等号成立当且仅当T K1,n-1,其中Tc为T的补图,K1,n-1为n阶星图.同时证明了对于n阶双星图S(a,b)的Nordhaus-Gaddum类型谱半径随a的值单调上升,其中[n-1/2]≤a≤n-3.     

On the Bishop boundary in topological algebras

We characterize the existence of the Bishop boundary in the context of an Urysohn (topological) algebra, by means ofG _δ points. Considering a subset of its spectrum and the restriction of its Gel'fand transform algebra on the previous subset, we realize its Bishop boundary, as the trace of the Bishop boundary of the initial algebra on the spectrum of the restriction algebra. We get a generalization of the latter by considering a continuous algebra morphism. This paper is based on and extends results of the author's Doctoral Thesis, written under the supervision of Professor A. Mallios (Univ. of Athens).
