Symmetric nonnegative realizability via partitioned majorization

A sufficient condition for symmetric nonnegative realizability of a spectrum is given in terms of (weak) majorization of a partition of the negative eigenvalues by a selection of the positive eigenvalues. If there are more than two positive eigenvalues, an additional condition, besides majorization, is needed on the partition. This generalizes observations of Suleǐmanova and Loewy about the cases of one and two positive eigenvalues, respectively. It may be used to provide insight into realizability of 5-element spectra and beyond.     

Comparisons of mixed systems with decreasing failure rate component lifetimes using dispersive order

Because lifetimes of systems are not deterministic, partially, orders are used for comparison purposes which lead us to provide optimal system configurations. This paper deals with a signature‐based dispersive ordering of mixed systems. It is assumed that component lifetimes are independent and identically distributed, and the common distribution has a decreasing failure rate function. Some illustrative examples are also given.     

Stochastic comparison of aggregate claim amounts between two heterogeneous portfolios and its applications

The aggregate claim amount in a particular time period is a quantity of fundamental importance for proper management of an insurance company and also for pricing of insurance coverages. In this paper, we show that the proportional hazard rates (PHR) model, which includes some well-known distributions such as exponential, Weibull and Pareto distributions, can be used as the aggregate claim amount distribution. We also present some conditions for the use of exponentiated Weibull distribution as the claim amount distribution. The results established here complete and extend the well-known result of Khaledi and Ahmadi (2008).     

Muirhead-Rado inequality for compact groups

Muirhead’s majorization inequality was extended by Rado to the case of arbitrary permutation groups. We further generalize this inequality to compact groups and their linear representations over the reals. We characterize saturation of the inequality, and describe the saturation condition in detail for the case of actions on Hermitian operators. Linear maps preserving group majorization

A necessary and sufficient condition for a linear map to preserve group majorizations is given. The condition is applied to prove some preservation results.     

On fail‐safe systems under random shocks

In practical situations, systems often suffer shocks from external stressing environments, stressing the system at random. These random shocks may have non‐ignorable effects on the system's reliability. In this paper, we provide sufficient (and necessary) conditions on components' lifetimes and their surviving probabilities from random shocks for comparing the lifetimes of two fail‐safe systems by means of the usual stochastic, hazard rate, and likelihood ratio orderings. Numerical examples are presented to highlight these theoretical results as well.     

On Harmonic Majorization of the Martin Function at Infinity in a Cone

This paper shows that some characterizations of the harmonic majorization of the Martin function for domains having smooth boundaries also hold for cones.     

Majorization, range inclusion, and factorization for bounded linear operators

In this paper, relationships among the concepts, majorization, range inclusion, and factorization, are studied in a general setting for bounded linear operators. Some applications of these concepts are given.
