The universal nilpotent group compactification of a semigroup

The purpose of this paper is to introduce an algebra of functions on a semitopological semigroup and to study these functions from the point of view of universal semigroup compactification. We show that the corresponding semigroup compactification of this algebra is universal with respect to the property of being a nilpotent group.

     

Needle Variations and Almost Lower Semicontinuous Differential Inclusions

It is shown that the construction of needle variations can be carried out for almost lower semicontinuous differential inclusions rather than for the case of ordinary single-valued continuously differentiable vector fields usually considered in the literature. The construction leads to needle variations whose flows are in general set-valued but still have good differentiability properties. The variations are constructed by using single-valued selections that are not necessarily continuous with respect to the state variable, but have instead a much weaker 'integral continuity' property, somewhat more general that the 'directional continuity' considered in previous work by A. Cambini and S. Querci, A. Pucci, and A. Bressan. The existence of many such selections is proved by slightly adapting an argument due to Bressan, extending it from the lower semicontinuous to the almost lower semicontinuous case, and strengthening it to yield not only directional continuity at all points but also full continuity at a specified point.     

Rhythmic pattern formations in gels and Matalon—Packter law: A fresh perspective

The periodic precipitation pattern formation in gelatinous media is interpreted as a moving boundary problem. The time law, spacing law and width law are revisited on the basis of the new scenario. The explicit dependence of the geometric structure on the initial concentrations of the reactants is derived. Matalon—Packter law, which relates the spacing coefficient with the initial concentrations is reformulated removing many ambiguities and impractical parameters. Experimental results are discussed to establish the significance of moving boundary concept in the diffusion controlled pattern forming systems     

On co-semihereditary rings

A ringR is left co-semihereditary (strongly left co-semihereditary) if every finitely cogenerated factor of a finitely cogenerated (arbitrary) injective leftR-module is injective. A left co-semihereditary ring, which is not strongly left co-semihereditary, is given to answer a question of Miller and Tumidge in the negative. If _R U _S defines a Morita duality,R is proved to be left co-semihereditary (left semihereditmy) if and only ifS is right semihereditary (right co-semihereditary). Assuming thatS⩾R is an almost excellent extension,S is shown to be (strongly) right co-semihereditary if and only ifR is (strongly) right co-semihereditary. Cyclic reduction and FACR methods for piecewise hermite bicubic orthogonal spline collocation

Cyclic reduction and Fourier analysis-cyclic reduction (FACR) methods are presented for the solution of the linear systems which arise when orthogonal spline collocation with piecewise Hermite bicubics is applied to boundary value problems for certain separable partial differential equations on a rectangle. On anN×N uniform partition, the cyclic reduction and Fourier analysis-cyclic reduction methods requireO(N ²log₂ N) andO(N ²log₂log₂ N) arithmetic operations, respectively.
