A discontinuous Galerkin method for Stokes equation by divergence-free patch reconstruction

A discontinuous Galerkin method by patch reconstruction is proposed for Stokes flows. A locally divergence-free reconstruction space is employed as the approximation space, and the interior penalty method is adopted which imposes the normal component penalty terms to cancel out the pressure term. Consequently, the Stokes equation can be solved as an elliptic system instead of a saddle-point problem due to such weak form. The number of degree of freedoms of our method is the same as the number of elements in the mesh for different order of accuracy. The error estimations of the proposed method are given in a classical style, which are then verified by some numerical examples.     

Supercritical superprocesses: Proper normalization and non-degenerate strong limit

Suppose that X = {X_t, t≥0; P_μ} is a supercritical superprocess in a locally compact separable metric space E. Let φ0 be a positive eigenfunction corresponding to the first eigenvalue λ_0 of the generator of the mean semigroup of X. Then Mt := e~(-λ_0t)〈φ0,X_t〉 is a positive martingale. Let M_∞ be the limit of M_t. It is known(see Liu et al.(2009)) that M_∞ is non-degenerate if and only if the L log L condition is satisfied. In this paper we are mainly interested in the case when the L log L condition is not satisfied. We prove that, under some conditions, there exist a positive function γ_t on [0,∞) and a non-degenerate random variable W such that for any finite nonzero Borel measure μ on E,lim/t→∞γ_t〈φ0,X_t〉=W, a.s.-P_μ~.We also give the almost sure limit of γ_t〈f, X_t〉for a class of general test functions f.     

Law of Large Numbers for Branching Symmetric Hunt Processes with Measure-Valued Branching Rates

We establish weak and strong laws of large numbers for a class of branching symmetric Hunt processes with the branching rate being a smooth measure with respect to the underlying Hunt process, and the branching mechanism being general and state dependent. Our work is motivated by recent work on the strong law of large numbers for branching symmetric Markov processes by Chen and Shiozawa (J Funct Anal 250:374–399, 2007) and for branching diffusions by Engländer et al. (Ann Inst Henri Poincaré Probab Stat 46:279–298, 2010). Our results can be applied to some interesting examples that are covered by neither of these papers.     

Unique Orbital Normal Form for Vector Fields of Hopf-Zero Singularity

Normal forms for vector fields of Hopf-zero singularity in R³ are studied. Multiple Lie bracket method is used to give unique normal forms under both conjugacy and orbital equivalence for such vector fields with a generic quadratic part.Dedicated to Professor Shui-Nee Chow on the occasion of his 60th birthday.     

Multiple mixed states of nodal solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger systems

In this paper we develop a general critical point theory to deal with existence and locations of multiple critical points produced by minimax methods in relation to multiple invariant sets of the associated gradient flow. The motivation is to study non-trivial nodal solutions with each component sign-changing for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger systems which arise from Bose–Einstein condensates theory. Our general method allows us to obtain infinitely many mixed states of nodal solutions for the repulsive case.     

On cutting sequences of the <Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis>-shaped translation surface tiled by three squares

We consider a symbolic coding of bi-infinite non periodic geodesics on the L-shaped translation surface tiled by three squares. Each bi-infinite non periodic geodesic is associated with a cutting sequence corresponding to the sequence of labeled saddle connections hit. We prove that there is a relationship between the cutting sequences and the actions of some affine automorphisms of the translation surface. We also get an explicit formula to determine the direction of a bi-infinite non periodic geodesic by using the corresponding cutting sequence.     

Topological multiplicity of the maximum eigenvalue of graph 1-Laplacian

In this paper, we reveal the connection between the independent number of a graph and the topological multiplicity of the maximal eigenvalue of the corresponding graph 1-Laplacian. The pseudo independent number of a graph is introduced, which provides a better lower estimate of the topological multiplicity of the maximum eigenvalue. The technique of our proof is based on the localization property of the eigenvector for graph 1-Laplacian, the Krasnoselski genus, and its relation to the topological join.     

Well-Posedness of the Ericksen–Leslie System

We prove the local well-posedness of the Ericksen–Leslie system, and the global well-posedness for small initial data under a physical constraint condition on the Leslie coefficients, which ensures that the energy of the system is dissipated. Instead of the Ginzburg–Landau approximation, we construct an approximate system with the dissipated energy based on a new formulation of the system.
