Additive Hermitian idempotent preservers between operator algebras

Let L be an additive map between (real or complex) matrix algebras sending $n\times n$ Hermitian idempotent matrices to $m\times m$ Hermitian idempotent matrices. We show that there are nonnegative integers $p,q$ with $n(p+q)=r\le m$ and an $m\times m$ unitary matrix U such that$L(A)=U[(I_p?A)\oplus (I_q?A^t)\oplus 0_{m?r}]U^{?},\text{for any}n\times n\text{Hermitian}A\text{with rational trace}.$ We also extend this result to the (complex) von Neumann algebra setting, and provide a supplement to the Dye-Bunce-Wright Theorem asserting that every additive map of Hermitian idempotents extends to a Jordan ?-homomorphism.     

The effects of learning in production and group size on the lot-sizing problem

One of the lot-sizing problem extensions that received noticeable attention in the literature is the one that investigated the effects of learning in production. The studies along this line of research assumed learning to improve with the number of repetitions following a power form. There is evidence also that the group size, i.e., the number of workers learning in a group affects performance (time per unit). This note revisits the problem and modifies it by incorporating the group size, along with cumulative production, as a proxy for measuring performance. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the behavior of the modified model. The results of the two models are also compared to draw some meaningful insights and conclusions. Although the results favor using a simple univariate learning curve, considering group size when modeling lot-sizing problems can significantly affect the unit production cost.     

The application of metal-organic frameworks in electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction

In recent years, the research of nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions has attracted wide attention for their relatively low energy consumption, in which rational design of electrocatalysts is the key to achieve high-performance NRR. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new kind of porous material, have been intensively studied in the past few decades owing to not only their structural versatility and tunability but also intrinsic porosity. Due to their structural features, MOFs also have potential applications in mild condition electrocatalysis of NRR. In this review, the recently experimental and theoretical studies of MOFs in NRR electrocatalysts are briefly summarized.     

New convolutions and their applicability to integral equations of Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel type

We propose four new convolutions exhibiting convenient factorization properties associated with two finite interval integral transformations of Fourier-type together with their norm inequalities. Moreover, we study the solvability of a class of integral equations of Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel type (on finite intervals) with the help of the factorization identities of such convolutions. Fourier-type series are used to produce the solution formula of such equations, and a Shannon-type sampling formula is also obtained.
