Open-cell metal foams are often used in heat exchangers and absorption equipment because they exhibit large specific surface area and present tortuous coolant flow paths. However, published research works on the characteristics of fluid flow in metal foams are relatively scarce, especially for the flow oscillation condition. The present experimental investigation attempts to uncover the behavior of steady and oscillating flows through metal foams with a tetrakaidecahedron structure. In the experiments, steady flow was supplied by an auto-balance compressor and flow oscillation was provided by an oscillating flow generator. The pressure drop and velocity were measured by the differential pressure transducer and hot-wire sensor, respectively. The friction factor of steady flow in metal foam channel was analyzed through the permeability and inertia coefficient of the porous medium. The results show that flow resistance in the metal foams increases with increasing form coefficient and decreasing permeability. The empirical equation obtained by the present study indicates that the maximum friction factor of oscillating flow through the tested aluminum foams with specific structure is governed by the hydraulic ligament diameter-based kinetic Reynolds number and the dimensionless flow amplitude.  相似文献

An investigation of fatigue crack propagation in rectangular AM60B magnesium alloy plates containing an inclined through crack is presented in this paper. The behavior of fatigue crack growth in the alloy is influenced by the fracture surface roughness. Therefore, in the present investigation, a new model is developed for estimating the magnitude of the frictional stress intensity factor, kf, arising from the mismatch of fracture surface roughness during in-plane shear. Based on the concept of kf, the rate of fatigue crack propagation, db/dN, is postulated to be a function of the effective stress intensity factor range, Δkeff. Subsequently, the proposed model is applied to predict crack growth due to fatigue loads. Experiments for verifying the theoretical predictions were also conducted. The results obtained are compared with those predicted using other employed mixed mode fracture criteria and the experimental data.  相似文献

A high friction coefficient is first observed as a sliding between bodies commences, which is called the static friction. Then, the friction coefficient decreases approaching the lowest stationary value, which is called the kinetic friction. Thereafter, if the sliding stops for a while and then it starts again, the friction coefficient recovers and a similar behavior as that in the first sliding is reproduced. In this article the subloading-friction model with a smooth elastic–plastic sliding transition [Hashiguchi, K., Ozaki, S., Okayasu, T., 2005. Unconventional friction theory based on the subloading surface concept. Int. J. Solids Struct. 42, 1705–1727] is extended so as to describe the reduction from the static to kinetic friction and the recovery of the static friction. The reduction is formulated as the plastic softening due to the separations of the adhesions of surface asperities induced by the sliding and the recovery is formulated as the viscoplastic (creep) hardening due to the reconstructions of the adhesions of surface asperities during the elapse of time under a quite high actual contact pressure between edges of asperities.  相似文献

This work studies a mathematical model for the motion of a two mass–spring–damper system with friction, and has a two-fold purpose. The first is to start a mathematical study of the way detachment or slip waves, when the system transits from stick to slip motion, propagate in discrete and continuous systems. The introduction of friction changes the problems into systems of differential set-valued inclusions, which are mathematically interesting, but rather complex. The second is to use such a ‘simple’ system as an example of a very general existence and uniqueness theorem for systems described by set-valued pseudomonotone operators, Kuttler and Shillor (1999) and Andrews et al. The effect of friction behavior on the compacted density is significant, but the relationship between the topological properties of the contact network and friction behavior during powder compaction remains unclear. Based on the discrete element method (DEM), a DEM model for die compaction was established, and the Hertz contact model was modified into an elastoplastic contact model that was more suitable for metal-powder compaction. The evolution of the topological properties of the contact network and its mechanism during powder compaction was explored using the elastoplastic contact model. The results demonstrate that the friction behavior between the particles is closely related to the topological properties of the contact network. Side wall friction results in smaller clustering coefficient (CC) and excess contact (EC) in the lower region near the side wall. Corresponding to this phenomenon, the upper region near the side wall has more high-stress particles when the major principal stress threshold was considered, and the CC and EC are significantly higher than those in the other regions. This study provides a theoretical basis for improving powder compaction behavior.  相似文献
