Spectroscopic and Crystallographic Characterization of the R3N+−C−H⋅⋅⋅X Interaction

As appreciation for nonclassical hydrogen bonds has progressively increased, so have efforts to characterize these interesting interactions. Whereas several kinds of C−H hydrogen bonds have been well-studied, much less is known about the R₃N⁺−C−H⋅⋅⋅X variety. Herein, we present crystallographic and spectroscopic evidence for the existence of these interactions, with special relevance to Selectfluor chemistry. Of particular note is the propensity for Lewis bases to engage in nonclassical hydrogen bonding over halogen bonding with the electrophilic F atom of Selectfluor. Further, the first examples of ¹H NMR experiments detailing R₃N⁺−C−H⋅⋅⋅X (X=O, N) hydrogen bonds are described.     

Intramolecular,Interrupted Homo-Nazarov Cascade Biscyclizations to Angular (Hetero)Aryl-Fused Polycycles

Herein, a SnCl₄-catalyzed intramolecular, interrupted homo-Nazarov cascade biscyclization to access angular (hetero)aryl-fused polycycles is reported. Subsequent decarboxylation of the readily enolizable products afforded the angular products in up to 71 % yield over two steps, with the trans-diastereomers as the major products. The cyclopropyl homo-Nazarov cyclization precursors were formed using a scalable and modular synthetic route that, ultimately, offers access to 6,6,6-, 6,6,5-, 6,5,6-, 6,6,5,6-, and 6,6,6,5-fused angular polycyclic products. To showcase the rigor and utility of the method, an 8-step total synthesis of (±)-1-oxoferruginol, an antibacterial aromatic abietane diterpenoid, was disclosed.     

Oxidative Addition of Haloheteroarenes to Palladium(0): Concerted versus SNAr‐Type Mechanism

The kinetics of the oxidative additions of haloheteroarenes HetX (X=I, Br, Cl) to [Pd⁰(PPh₃)₂] (generated from [Pd⁰(PPh₃)₄]) have been investigated in THF and DMF and the rate constants have been determined. In contrast to the generally accepted concerted mechanism, Hammett plots obtained for substituted 2‐halopyridines and solvent effects reveal a reaction mechanism dependent on the halide X of HetX: an unprecedented S_NAr‐type mechanism for X=Br or Cl and a classical concerted mechanism for X=I. These results are supported by DFT studies.     

Intrinsic relaxation rates of polarized Cs vapor in miniaturized cells

The intrinsic relaxation rates of the vector magnetization of cesium vapor enclosed in microfabricated atomic magnetometer cells are investigated. Two methods—the optically detected magnetic resonance and the ground-state Hanle effect—are used to carry out automated measurements in dependence on cell temperature and nitrogen buffer gas pressure. The experimental results are compared with expected contributions of the different relaxation processes and in this way allow the discrimination between them to help further optimization of cell design. The methods are compared in terms of basic features, data quality, and practical applicability.
