In today’s time-based competition, the unit cost of a high-tech product declines significantly over its short product life cycle. Consequently, in this paper, we relax the traditional economic production quantity model to allow for time-varying cost. We then prove that the optimal production schedule uniquely exists. In addition, we also show that the total cost is a convex function of the number of replenishments, which reduces the search for the optimal solution to finding a local minimum. An analytical expression of the complex permittivity is derived for absorbing centres featuring inhomogeneous absorption-line broadening. Such an expression gives the dispersion law of the real part of the permittivity when the imaginary part has a Gaussian lineshape. Our mathematical approach starts from an overlap integral of Lorentzian-type dielectric susceptibilities weighted by a Gaussian probability distribution of the resonance absorption energies. The analytical solution found is consistent with the Kramers–Kronig relation. We demonstrate that, like in the case of homogeneous absorption-line broadening, the refractive index increases at photon energies lower than the resonance absorption energy also for inhomogeneous absorption-line broadening; if the absorbing centres emit Stokes-shifted radiation, such an increase can be exploited for passive and active waveguiding applications. The present study is concerned with the determination of the optimal shape for a package containing multiple heating elements.
The optimization tool has been developed based on the inverse heat transfer (IHT) approach, incorporating a direct problem
solver, a numerical grid generator, a direct-differentiation sensitivity analyzer, and the conjugate gradient method. Shape
design that leads to a specified outer surface temperature distribution is predicted by the approach. In this study, the effects
of internal heat generation on optimal shapes of the packagings have also been evaluated. Several practical cases with various
