Longitudinal structure function <Emphasis Type="Italic">F</Emphasis><Subscript>L</Subscript>: Perturbative QCD and <Emphasis Type="Italic">k</Emphasis><Subscript>T</Subscript>-factorization versus experimental data at fixed <Emphasis Type="Italic">W</Emphasis>

We use the results for the structure function F_L for a gluon target with a nonzero transverse momentum squared at the order α_s, obtained in our previous paper, for comparison with recent H1 experimental data for F_L at fixed W values and with collinear GRV predictions in the leading-order and next-to-leading-order approximations.     

Nonstoichiometric Ti-Zr-Ni-V-Mn alloys: the effect of composition on hydrogen sorption and electrochemical characteristics

The effect of the stoichiometric factor on the electrochemical and gas-phase behavior of hydride-forming intermetallic alloys of the Ti_0.45Zr_0.55Ni_yV_0.45Mn_x general composition is studied. The structure and the phase composition of the alloys were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. An introduction of hydrogen does not change the structure type and hydriding is accompanied by an isotropic increase in the cell volume by about 20%. The alloys studied demonstrate maximum values of hydrogen sorption capacity, discharge capacity, and good rate capability throughout a wide range of compositions, rather than in a narrow region in the vicinity of the stoichiometric composition.Dedicated to Professor W. Methods of stabilizing the motions of reversible dynamic systems using non-linear canonical transformations

Methods of synthesizing stabilizing and robust control laws for non-linear reversible systems which ensure asymptotic stability of programmed motions, specified figures of merit and decomposition of transients are considered. Non-linear canonical transformations of state space and the controls are obtained which simplify the synthesis and analysis of the laws of the stabilization of reversible dynamic systems.

Broken even-odd symmetry in self-selection of distances between nanoclusters due to the presence or absence of topological solitons

Depositing particles randomly on a 1D lattice is expected to result in an equal number of particle pairs separated by even or odd lattice units. Unexpectedly, the even-odd symmetry is broken in the self-selection of distances between indium magic-number clusters on a Si(100)-2×1 reconstructed surface. Cluster pairs separated by even units are less abundant because they are linked by silicon atomic chains carrying topological solitons, which induce local strain and create localized electronic states with higher energy. Our findings reveal a unique particle-particle interaction mediated by the presence or absence of topological solitons on alternate lattices.
