This article describes the progress in experimental studies of liquid-crystalline blue phases during the past 5 years. Additionally, these results are compared critically with the predictions of theories of the blue phases. Areas considered in this review include (i) the thermodynamic stability of the three polymorphic blue phases and the influence of the cholesteric pitch on this; (ii) the phase diagrams of blue phases; (iii) electric field effects on the blue phase structure and stability; (iv) the morphology and growth of liquid single crystals of blue phases; (v) the symmetry and structural properties of the blue phases.  相似文献

Abstract To explore the drivers of change in the complex system relating small pelagic fisheries and fishmeal/fish oil markets, to identify the interactions between these drivers and their overall impacts, we propose a bio‐economic model, coupling the ecological and the economic dynamics of these global commodities. The model enables an analysis of the consequences of both global and local changes in the environment of production systems. Through sensitivity analysis of specific input parameters, we evaluate the robustness of the overall system to such changes and show that local responses of production systems and markets cannot be considered in isolation from the set of interactions at global level.  相似文献

We compare spectroscopic properties of higher order complexes of organic guests (e.g. naphthalene, phenols, indole, C60 fullerene) with cyclodextrins (CDx) to results of molecular modeling investigations. Naphthalene 1:2 complexes with -CDx show high spectral resolution and peculiar triplet properties. Molecular simulations and calculation of the experimentally measured induced circular dichroism (ICD) provide detailed structural information.  相似文献

Junction lines, where three or more interfaces meet in polycrystalline materials, are analysed from a topological point of view. Using circuit mapping methods, it is shown that, in contiguous polyerystals, the dislocations constituting the interfaces always react at junctions according to topological conservation principles. This conclusion is at variance with recent suggestions in the literature. In addition, it is shown that, in certain circumstances, junction lines can themselves exhibit defect character, i.e., dislocation and/or disclination character. Such defects arise in order to accommodate the coexistence of the abutting crystals. Simple examples are illustrated.  相似文献

Then we show the existence of a measure with the property that its pushforward by the thinness function is a probability measure of truncated normal distribution. Ab initio molecular orbital methods at the CBS-Q level of theory have been used to study the effect of substituent (F, Cl, NH2, OH and CH3) on the gas-phase acidities of formic acid, HCOOH, its silicon and sulphur derivatives R-M(= X)XH(M = C., Si; X = 0, S; R = F, Cl, OH, NH2 and CH3). For formic acid and its thio and dithio derivatives the acidity changes upon substitution are irregular and depend on both the type of substituent, position and degree of replacement of oxygen atoms by sulphur atoms. For sila carboxylic acids and their thio and dithio derivatives the calculated acidities regularly increase in the order: R-SiOOH < R-Si(=S)OH ? R-Si(=O)SH < R-SiSSH(R = H, F, Cl, OH, NH2 and CH3). The chloro derivatives are the strongest among the acids studied. The highest gas phase acidity (1277.6 kJmol?1) has been calculated for ClC(=S)OH.  相似文献

L-glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter, binds to both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. In certain parts of the brain the BBB contains two normally impermeable barriers: 1) cerebral endothelial barrier and 2) cerebral epithelial barrier. Human cerebral endothelial cells express NMDA receptors; however, to date, human cerebral epithelial cells (neuroepithelial cells) have not been shown to express NMDA receptor message or protein. In this study, human hypothalamic sections were examined for NMDA receptors (NMDAR) expression via immunohistochemistry and murine neuroepithelial cell line (V1) were examined for NMDAR via RT-PCR and Western analysis. We found that human cerebral epithelium express protein and cultured mouse neuroepithelial cells express both mRNA and protein for the NMDA receptor. These findings may have important consequences for neuroepithelial responses during excitotoxicity and in disease.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

It is our concept to use a polymer as a hydrophilic cushion to stabilize a lipid bilayer on a solid support. This can be accomplished by using polyacrylamides with disulfides and DMPE anchors as a hydrophilic cushion. These polymers have the additional functionalities to chemisorb on gold surfaces through the disulfides and to bind a lipid bilayer on it through the insertion of the lipid anchors into the lipid bilayer. This paper shows that a polymer with the additional functionality of charged groups increases the attraction of vesicles to form a tethered supported lipid bilayer. By varying the amount of charged groups in the polymer, we are able to control the hydrophilic behavior of the polymer and therefore are able to change the wetting on a surface. This was examined by measuring the contact angles. Using the technique of the surface plasmon spectroscopy, we are able to monitor the process of vesicle fusion on the polymer support.  相似文献
