The length-fractionation of shortened (250 to 25 nm), zwitterion-functionalized, single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been demonstrated via gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The UV-Vis spectrum of each fraction indicates an apparent "solubilization", as evident by the direct observation of all predicted optically allowed interband transitions between the mirror image spikes in the density of states of both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs with various tube diameters. As evident by the presence or absence of the 270 nm, pi-plasmon absorption, this "solubilization" is a dynamic process and leads to re-aggregation if left undisturbed for a couple of weeks or upon dissociation of the pendant octadecylamine groups. This non-destructive and highly versatile separation methodology opens up an array of possible applications for shortened SWNTs in nanostructured devices.  相似文献

Thermochromic liquid crystals (TLCs) have proven to be a valuable tool for the collection of full-field, high-resolution heat transfer data. This paper presents an extension of previously developed calibration techniques to a simplified transonic linear cascade for a highly cambered turbine blade geometry. This required the introduction of miniature periscopes to image the measurement surfaces. The procedures and equipment used to ensure high-accuracy wide-band TLC measurements are presented. These included a geometry-matched calibration device, mechanisms to accurately position the borescope imaging optics, an algorithm to automatically divide the imaging region into a large number of calibration subregions (termed as cells), and algorithms to correct for geometric and optical image distortions. The cell calibration approach is shown to halve calibration times and dramatically reduce memory requirements when compared to a pixel-by-pixel calibration. The results of an extensive validation study are presented. This work was funded by the General Electric Aircraft Engines Strategic Alliance Program.  相似文献

Bulk-service multi-server queues with heterogeneous server capacity and thresholds are commonly seen in several situations such as passenger transport or package delivery services. In this paper, we develop a novel decomposition-based solution approach for such queues using arguments from renewal theory. We then obtain the distribution of the waiting time measure for multi-type server systems. We also obtain other useful performance measures such as utilization, expected throughput time, and expected queue lengths.

Manufacturing supply chains are considered as discrete event dynamical systems (DEDS) where coordination of material and information flows is essential to satisfy customer orders and to improve the bottomline of the constituent organizations. A critical problem that is often faced by distribution centres that hold finished good inventory is that of inventory rationing. Inventory rationing is a useful strategy to tackle the problem of conflicting objectives i.e., minimizing inventory costs (holding and backorder) on the one hand and achieving the desired customer service levels (CSLs) on the other. The focus of this paper is to formulate Generalized Stochastic Petri net models to address the inventory rationing problem in the context of multi-echelon make-to-stock distribution chains, where the goods flow through multiple echelons, typically from product manufacturers all the way up-to the retail outlets. The statistical inventory control (SIC) policies modeled by the GSPN are (R, s, S) and a variant that we propose, (R, s, S). We compare the performance of the model under two rationing settings. The first setting considers a case without cooperation, where the individual local stockpoints maximize their own performance. The second setting considers a case with cooperation, where the local stockpoints cooperate with each other to maximize the overall system performance. We provide a methodology to approximately determine the optimal rational fractions with different weights assigned to expected backorder and holding cost components (b/h). We present some interesting results obtained after rigorous numerical experimentation on the model.  相似文献

In developing countries, truck purchase cost is the dominant criteria for fleet acquisition-related decisions. However, we contend that other cost factors such as loss due to the number of en route truck stoppages based on a truck type and recovery cost associated with a route choice decision, should also be considered for deciding the fleet mix and minimizing the overall costs for long-haul shipments. The resulting non-linear model, with integer variables for the number and type of trucks, and the route choices, is solved via genetic algorithm. Using real data from a bulk liquid hazmat transporter, the trade-offs between the cost of travel, loss due to number of truck stoppages, and the long-term recovery cost associated with the risk of exposure due to a hazmat carrier accident are discussed. The numerical experiments show that when factors related to public safety and truck stoppages are taken into account for transportation, the lowest total cost and optimal route choice do not align with the cheapest truck type option; rather, the optimal solution corresponds to another truck type and route with total costs significantly less than the total costs associated with the cheapest truck type. Our model challenges the current truck purchasing strategy adopted in developing countries using the cheapest truck criteria.  相似文献

Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique using pulsed-DC power supply was used to fabricate diamond like carbon (DLC) films at deposition rates as high as 110 nm/min. The DLC films deposited by pulsed-DC and DC based power supplies under different gas flow ratios were studied for their suitability as dielectric layer coatings in plasma display panels (PDPs). The effect of deposition parameters on the properties of the DLC films were studied using Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). FTIR reveals that higher hydrogen dilution in gas mixture leads to higher sp3 content. SE studies in wide spectral range were analyzed using Tauc-Lorentz model dielectric function. A rise in the extracted refractive index was seen on increasing the H2 content in the feed gas, thus resulting in optically denser films. Secondary electron emission coefficient (γ) was measured in the films deposited by the DC and pulsed-DC based PECVD. Firing voltage in the DLC samples was found to have very low variation in the operating pressure range used in commercial PDPs, suggesting possibility of enhanced long term reliability of DLC coatings in future PDP applications.  相似文献

We report a strategy to rewire cell surfaces for the dynamic control of ligand composition on cell membranes and the modulation of cell–cell interactions to generate three‐dimensional (3D) tissue structures applied to stem‐cell differentiation, cell‐surface tailoring, and tissue engineering. We tailored cell surfaces with bioorthogonal chemical groups on the basis of a liposome‐fusion and ‐delivery method to create dynamic, electroactive, and switchable cell‐tissue assemblies through chemistry involving chemoselective conjugation and release. Each step to modify the cell surface: activation, conjugation, release, and regeneration, can be monitored and modulated by noninvasive, label‐free analytical techniques. We demonstrate the utility of this methodology by the conjugation and release of small molecules to and from cell surfaces and by the generation of 3D coculture spheroids and multilayered cell tissues that can be programmed to undergo assembly and disassembly on demand.  相似文献
