Plasticity field adjacent to faces of asperities on a rotating roll after initial indentation into a half-space

The plastic deformation field near the horizontal surface of a half space of perfectly plastic material associated with an indenting rotating rigid tooth is studied using slip line theory. The tooth is one of many on a roll surface and indents first into the half-space material and then rotates about the roll center. A slip line field is proposed for the deforming plastic region and a solution scheme is outlined. The emphasis is on determining the shape of the deforming region, especially that of the free surface. The study has a potential application in roughness transfer in metal forming processing.

Large Discrepancy In Homogenous Quasi-Arithmetic Progressions

We prove that the class of homogeneous quasi-arithmetic progressions has unbounded discrepancy. That is, we show that given any 2-coloring of the natural numbers and any positive integer D, one can find a real number α≥1 and a set of natural numbers of the form {0, [α], [2α], [3α], . . . , [kα]} so that one color appears at least D times more than the other color. This was already proved by Beck in 1983, but the proof given here is somewhat simpler and gives a better bound on the discrepancy.     

Positive solutions and eigenvalue regions of two-delay singular systems with a twin parameter

The paper is concerned with a two-delay singular differential system with a twin parameter. Applying fixed-point index theory, we show the relationship between the asymptotic behaviors of nonlinearities (at zero and infinity) and the open regions (eigenvalue regions) of parameters, which are correlated with delays, such that the system has zero, one and two positive solution(s).     

Measuring Light Field of Light Source with High Directional Resolution Using Mirrored Ball and Pinhole Camera

This paper presents a method of measuring a light field of a light source with high directional resolution using a mirrored ball and a pinhole camera. The light field describes a spatial and directional distribution of radiances from the light source. The directional distribution is expanded by a reflection on the mirrored ball, and the radiances are measured by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera with a pinhole lens. The light source is laterally moved by a robot arm to measure the directionally expanded light field, and each pixel on a CCD can obtain the radiances from the light source through the pinhole lens with high directional resolution. The light field is estimated from the pixel value and the position of each pixel using a ray tracing technique. The light field of a krypton lamp was experimentally measured by the proposed method, and the accuracy of the measurement was evaluated against the irradiances measured by a spectro-radiometer at sample points.     

A study of the effect of ZrO2 on the magnetic properties of FePt/ZrO2 multilayer

Fe_xPt_100−x(30 nm) and [Fe_xPt_100−x(3 nm)/ZrO₂]₁₀ (x = 37, 48, 57, 63, 69) films with different ZrO₂ content were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering technique, then were annealed at 550 °C for 30 min. This work investigates the effect of ZrO₂ doping on the microstructural evolution, magnetic properties, grain size, as well as the ordering kinetics of FePt alloy films. The as-deposited films behaved a disordered state, and the ordered L1₀ structure was obtained by post-annealing. The magnetic properties of the films are changed from soft magnetism to hard magnetism after annealing. The variation of the largest coercivities of [Fe_xPt_100−x/ZrO₂]₁₀ films with the Fe atomic percentage, x and differing amounts of ZrO₂ content reveals that as we increase the ZrO₂ content we must correspondingly increase the amount of Fe. This phenomenon suggests that the Zr or O atoms of ZrO₂ preferentially react with the Fe atoms of FePt alloy to form compounds. In addition, introducing the nonmagnetic ZrO₂ can reduce the intergrain exchange interactions of the FePt/ZrO₂ films, and the interactions are decreased as the ZrO₂ content increases, the dipole interactions are observed in FePt/ZrO₂ films as the ZrO₂ content is more than 15%.     

Effects of trapped electrons on the line shape in emission Mössbauer spectra

To explain line broadening in emission Mössbauer spectra as compared to the corresponding absorber measurements, the model of trapped electrons has been proposed. Auger electrons (emitted, e.g. after electron capture by ⁵⁷Co or after the converted isomeric transition of ^119mSn), as well as secondary electrons, may be trapped in the proximity to the nucleogenic ion. Electrons captured by lattice traps at different distances from the daughter ion induce an asymmetric distribution of quadrupole splitting in the resulting emission spectra, as shown in a few examples. This model is supported by estimates of quadrupole splitting values which may be caused by such trapped electrons located at specified distances from the nucleogenic atom.     

TRIUMF resonant ionization laser ion source

The range of isotopes available at the TRIUMF Isotope Separator Accelerator (ISAC) facility has been greatly enhanced by adding a Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS). A large wavelength range is accessible with the fundamental, second and third harmonic generation of titanium-sapphire laser light. In addition a dedicated laser is available for non-resonant laser ionization. The first on-line beam ⁶²Ga was delivered in Dec. 2004. In general RILIS improves the intensity, purity and emittance of ion beams. ⁶²Ga and ²⁶Al and Be beams have been delivered so far on-line. This work was financed by TRIUMF which is federally funded via a contribution agreement through the National Research Council of Canada.     

Tropical Weyl Group Action via Point Configurations and τ-Functions of the q-Painlevé Equations

Starting from certain point sets in the projective plane, we construct a tropical (or subtraction-free birational) representation of Weyl groups over the field of τ-functions. In particular, our construction includes E ₈ ⁽¹⁾ , E ₇ ⁽¹⁾ , E ₆ ⁽¹⁾ and D ₅ ⁽¹⁾ as affine cases; each of them gives rise to the q-difference Painlevé equation.     

Performance Analysis for Mobile Ad Hoc Network in Random Graph Models with Spatial Reuse

In this paper,we present a random graph model with spatial reuse for a mobile ad hoc network(MANET) based on the dynamic source routing protocol.Many important performance parameters of theMANET are obtained,such as the average flooding distance (AFD),the probability generating function of theflooding distance,and the probability of a flooding route to be symmetric.Compared with the random graphmodel without spatial reuse,this model is much more effective because it has a smaller value of AFD and alarger probability for finding a symmetric valid route.
