Based on a sequence of points and a particular linear transformation generalized from this sequence, two recent papers (E. Mauch and Y. Shi, Using a sequence of number pairs as an example in teaching mathematics. Math. Comput. Educ., 39 (2005), pp. 198–205; Y. Shi, Case study projects for college mathematics courses based on a particular function of two variables. Int. J. Math. Educ. Sci. Techn., 38 (2007), pp. 555–566) have presented some interesting examples which can be used in teaching high school and college mathematics classes. In this article, we further discuss a few interesting ways to apply this sequence of points in teaching college mathematics courses such as linear algebra, numerical methods in computing, and discrete mathematics. In addition to using them in individual courses, these studies may also be combined together to offer seminars or workshops to college mathematics students. Studies like these are likely to promote student interests and get students more involved in the learning process, and therefore make the learning process more effective.  相似文献

We here describe a novel multi-agent model of the decentralized task selection process in honeybee colonies. The model is based on individual behavioural programs represented as hierarchical finite state automatons. We successfully simulated empirical experiments (with real honeybees) using the model. We shed more light on task specialization and polyethism in honeybees by modelling the heterogeneous environment that emerges over time inside the colony and by considering the changing differences in stimuli strength in each small area of the hive. Our simulation experiments presented here investigate the model's reaction to changing values in crucial model parameters and investigate the stability of the predicted colony behaviours.  相似文献

Abstract

A new optical filter design based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal ring resonator structure with an N-channel model is proposed in this article. This study also shows that modifying the scatter radius and the waveguide width can significantly improve the performance of the original structure, which can solve the mode mismatch problem for output waveguide. Here, an example of a 16-channel photonic crystal ring resonator is provided; wavelength spacing of 1.6 nm and a high quality factor Q of 6,000 were achieved. The optical filter would be a potential key component in the application of dense wavelength division multiplexer devices.  相似文献

Abstract

A survivable wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network enabling both point-to-point service and broadcast service is presented and demonstrated. This architecture provides an automatic traffic recovery against feeder and distribution fiber link failure, respectively. In addition, it also simplifies the protection design for multiple services transmission in wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks.  相似文献

Abstract

A recent study discussing different ring-resonator- and fiber-based gyroscopes concluded that the performance of a single-loop resonant fiber-optical gyro exceeds that of more complex ring-resonator-based gyros. It is demonstrated here that this conclusion applies as well to a gyro that consists of a closed loop of coupled-ring resonators with internal feedback. While this device is more sensitive to rotation than other gyro structures with the same footprint and losses, a simpler alternative consisting of a resonant single ring with an area equal to complex gyro structures still displays a higher degree of sensitivity.  相似文献

Abstract

This article proposes various combinations of optical amplifiers for a dense wavelength division multiplexed system and investigates the impact of reduced channel spacing at high bit rates in terms of quality factor, bit error rate, eye closure, and output power. It is reported that the hybrid optical amplifier (Raman–erbium-doped fiber amplifier [EDFA]) provides better results with a maximum covered single span distance (220 km) at channel spacing of 6.25 GHz. The maximum acceptable bit rate for the 12.5-GHz channel spacing dense wavelength division multiplexed system is also investigated, and the recommendation is provided that for the Raman–EDFA, Raman–EDFA–Raman, EDFA–Raman–EDFA, and EDFA–semiconductor optical amplifier–EDFA, the operating bit rate should not be greater than 20, 16, 19, and 20 Gbps, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

Video on demand is a very attractive service used for entertainment, education, and other purposes. The design of passive optical networking+Ethernet over coaxial cable accessing and a home gateway system is proposed. The network integrates the passive optical networking and Ethernet over coaxial cable to provide high dedicated bandwidth for the metropolitan video-on-demand services. Using digital video broadcasting, IP television protocol, unicasting, and broadcasting mechanisms maximizes the system throughput. The home gateway finishes radio frequency signal receiving and provides three kinds of interfaces for high-definition video, voice, and data, which achieves triple-play and wire/wireless access synchronously.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents a novel bidirectional wavelength reconfigurable optical network utilizing a remotely pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifier and tunable fiber Bragg gratings. The system is experimentally demonstrated at a 10-Gb/s per channel over 20-km fiber span that verifies the metro-network range system performance. The achieved power penalty is less than 1 dB when compared to the back-to-back transmission link. An example of practical application where the proposed module is used as an add/drop multiplexer and a remote node in the bidirectional wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network system is described.  相似文献
