These contributions explore interaction modes between the methanethoil (CH3SH) molecule and the Fe(100) surface via implementing accurate density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the inclusion of van der Waals corrections. We consider three adsorption sites over the Fe(100) surface, namely, top(T), bridge (B), and hollow (H) sites as potential catalytic active sites for the molecular and dissociative adsorption of the CH3SH molecule. The molecular adsorption structures are found to occupy either B or T sites with former sites holding higher stability by 0.17 eV. The inclusion of van der Waals corrections refound to slightly alter adsorption energies. For instance, adsorption energies increased by ~ 0.18 and ~ 0.21 eV for B and T structure, respectively, in reference to values obtained by the plain generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functional. A stability ordering of the dissociation products was found to follow the sequence (CH4, S) > (CH3, S, H) > (─SCH3, H) > (─CH3, SH). The differential charge density distributions were examined to underpin prominent electronic contributing factors. Direct fission of C─S bond in the CH3SH molecule attains exothermic values in the range 2.0 to 2.1 eV. The most energetically favorable sites for the surface-mediated fission of the thiol's S─H bond correspond to the structure where the ─SCH3 and H are both situated on hollow sites with an adsorption energy of −2.43 eV. Overall, we found that inclusion of van der Waals functional to change the binding energies more noticeably in case of dissociative adsorption structures. The results presented herein should be instrumental in efforts that aim to design stand-alone Fe desulfurization catalysts.  相似文献

Rigid and little moldable curdlan, a linear β-1,3-glucan having intra- and interchain hydrogen bonds, was reacted with several alkyl isocyanates, which gave thermoplastic curdlan alkyl carbamates (CrdC) with degree of substitution about 2. The alkyl carbamation at hydroxy groups in the glucan skeleton effectively broke the interchain hydrogen bonds of curdlan and increased flexibility of CrdC, while the newly formed carbamate moieties could moderately keep the hydrogen bonding ability in CrdC. Elongating the alkyl groups in the carbamate side chains increased solubility in organic solvents and thermoplasticity of CrdC, which enabled to make homogeneous and free-standing films by both methods of solution-casting and hot-pressing.  相似文献

The potential energy curves and spectroscopic constants of the ground and many excited states of the FrAr van der Waals system have been determined using a one‐electron pseudopotential approach. The Fr+ core and the electron–Ar interactions are replaced by effective potentials. The Fr+Ar core–core interaction is incorporated using the accurate CCSD(T) potential of Hickling et al. (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2004, 6, 4233). This approach reduces the number of active electrons of the FrAr van der Waals system to only one valence electron, which permits the use of very large basis sets for the Fr and Ar atoms. Using this technique, the potential energy curves of the ground and many excited states are calculated at the self consistent field (SCF) level. In addition, the spin–orbit interaction is also considered using the semiempirical scheme for the states dissociating into Fr (7p) and Fr (8p). The FrAr system is not studied previously and its potential interactions, spectroscopic constants and dipole functions are presented here for the first time. Furthermore, we have predicted the X2Σ+A2Π1/2, X2Σ+AΠ3/2, X2Σ+B2Σ1/2+, X2Σ+–32Π1/2, X2Σ+–32Π3/2, and X2Σ+–52Σ1/2+ absorption spectra. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We investigate the performance of several van der Waals (vdW) functionals at calculating the interactions between benzene and the copper (111) surface, using the local orbital approach in the SIESTA code. We demonstrate the importance of using surface optimized basis sets to calculate properties of pure surfaces, including surface energies and the work function. We quantify the errors created using (3 × 3) supercells to study adsorbate interactions using much larger supercells, and show non‐negligible errors in the binding energies and separation distances. We examine the eight high‐symmetry orientations of benzene on the Cu (111) surface, reporting the binding energies, separation distance, and change in work function. The optimized vdW‐DF(optB88‐vdW) functional provides superior results to the vdW‐DF(revPBE) and vdW‐DF2(rPW86) functionals, and closely matches the experimental and experimentally deduced values. This work demonstrates that local orbital methods using appropriate basis sets combined with a vdW functional can model adsorption between metal surfaces and organic molecules.  相似文献

Arrays of anisotropic particles are sought after for applications in optics, electronics, and energy. Structures assembled from multiple micro‐ or nanoparticles could incorporate the distinct properties of each component to achieve functions not possible from single‐population assemblies. In mixed‐particle populations, the assembly forces may differ between the particle types, which will in turn influence the final assembled structures. Here, binary particle mixtures are studied and compared to assemblies formed from each of the component particles alone. The particles are partially etched nanowires (PENs, ≈300 nm diameter, and 3–8 μm overall length), which are formed by the silica coating and subsequent etching of striped metal nanowires, such that what remains are silica nanotubes containing segments of metal core (Au, Pt, Rh, or Pt/Au) with controllable location and number, spaced by “empty” regions that fill with water. Binary mixtures of PENs with different core metals and segment patterns are examined here to explore how the different core segment material, length, position, and number affects overall self‐assembly behavior.  相似文献

By state‐of‐the‐art quantum chemical methods, we show that for bulky functional groups like cyclohexane, [20]fullerene, dodecahedrane, and C60, the attractive dispersion interaction can have a greater impact on stereochemistry than the repulsive steric effect, making the compact isomer the more stable one. In particular, for the double C60 adduct of pentacene 1 , the syn isomer should be the main product instead of the anti one inferred in the original synthesis experiment (Y. Murata et al., J. Org. Chem.­ 1999 , 64, 3483). With and without dispersion interactions taken into account, the Gibbs energy difference ΔG(syn?anti) is ?6.36 and +1.15 kcal mol?1, respectively. This study reminds us that dispersion interactions as well as electrostatic or hyperconjugation effects, etc. can lead to some unusual stereochemical phenomena.  相似文献
