On factorization structures and epidense hulls

Characterizations of epidense subcategories of topological categories and of existence of epidense hulls have been described in [2, 3, 4]. In this paper a similar characterization is given in a much more general setting; for example the category need not have products. The relationship between finite factorization structures and existence of epidense hulls is investigated. It is found to be analogous to the relationship between general factorization structures and epireflective hulls.

An alternative approach to nonlinear filtering

The structure of a nonlinear filter with observation process having continuous and discontinuous components is considered. The approach is based on the so-called “Bayes” formula for conditional expectations. “Fubini” type theorems for stochastic integrals are given and used to obtain the representations of an optimal estimate and of the conditional likelihood ratio. A linear unnormalized filtering equation for controlled system process is derived.     

Integrated mean square properties of density estimation by orthogonal series methods for dependent variables

Summary The rates at which integrated mean square and mean squre errors of nonparametric density estimation by orthogonal series method for sequences of strictly stationary strong mixing random variables are obtained. These rates are better than those known to hold for the independent case and they are shown to hold for Markov processes. In fact our results when specialized to the independent case are improvements over previously known results of Schwartz (1967,Ann. Math. Statist.,38, 1262–1265). An extension of the results to estimation of the bivariate density is also given. Research supported by a faculty summer research grant MS-STAT-42 from the University of Petroleum and Minerals.     

An approximation theorem in shape theory

In this paper it is shown that if X is a compactum in the interior of a PL manifold M and if U is a neighborhood of X in M, then there is a compactum X′ in U such that X and X′ have the same relative shape in U and the embedding dimension of X′ equals the fundamental dimension of X. Whenever the dimension of M is not equal to three, the relative shape equivalence from X′ to X can be realized by an infinite isotopy of M.
