Equivalent conditions for noncentral generalized Laplacianness and independence of matrix quadratic forms

Let Y be an n×p multivariate normal random matrix with general covariance Σ_Y and W be a symmetric matrix. In the present article, the property that a matrix quadratic form Y^′WY is distributed as a difference of two independent (noncentral) Wishart random matrices is called the (noncentral) generalized Laplacianness (GL). Then a set of algebraic results are obtained which will give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the (noncentral) GL of a matrix quadratic form. Further, two extensions of Cochran’s theorem concerning the (noncentral) GL and independence of a family of matrix quadratic forms are developed.     

Algebraic reflexivity of sets of bounded operators on vector valued Lipschitz functions

In this paper we establish algebraic reflexivity properties of subsets of bounded linear operators acting on spaces of vector valued Lipschitz functions. We also derive a representation for the generalized bi-circular projections on these spaces.     

The number of harmonic frames of prime order

Harmonic frames of prime order are investigated. The primary focus is the enumeration of inequivalent harmonic frames, with the exact number given by a recursive formula. The key to this result is a one-to-one correspondence developed between inequivalent harmonic frames and the orbits of a particular set. Secondarily, the symmetry group of prime order harmonic frames is shown to contain a subgroup consisting of a diagonal matrix as well as a permutation matrix, each of which is dependent on the particular harmonic frame in question.     

On the divisorial spectrum of a Noetherian domain

For a Noetherian domain, the sets of divisorial primes, t-primes, and associated primes of principal ideals coincide. We study the divisorial primes of a Noetherian domain as a partially ordered set. In particular, we show that it is possible to have arbitrarily long chains and any finite amount of noncatenarity.     

Counter-examples for refinement of conjectures and proofs in primary school mathematics

The purpose of this study is to explore how primary school students reexamine their conjectures and proofs when they confront counter-examples to the conjectures they have proved. In the case study, a pair of Japanese fifth graders thought that they had proved their primitive conjecture with manipulative objects (that is, they constructed an action proof), and then the author presented a counter-example to them. Confronting the counter-example functioned as a driving force for them to refine their conjectures and proofs. They understood the reason why their conjecture was false through their analysis of its proof and therefore could modify their primitive conjecture. They also identified the part of the proof which was applicable to the counter-example. This identification and their action proof were essential for their invention of a more comprehensive conjecture.     

A New Class of Weak Solutions of the Navier–Stokes Equations with Nonhomogeneous Data

We investigate a class of weak solutions, the so-called very weak solutions, to stationary and nonstationary Navier–Stokes equations in a bounded domain . This notion was introduced by Amann [3], [4] for the nonstationary case with nonhomogeneous boundary data leading to a very large solution class of low regularity. Here we are mainly interested in the investigation of the “largest possible” class of solutions u for the more general problem with arbitrary divergence k = div u, boundary data g = u|_∂Ω and an external force f, as weak as possible, but maintaining uniqueness. In principle, we will follow Amann’s approach.     

Equations on real intervals

A (finite or infinite) set ∑ of equations, in operation symbols F_t (t ∈T) and variables x_i, is said to be compatible with iff there exist continuous operations F_t^A on such that the algebra satisfies the equations ∑ (with the variables x_i understood as universally quantified). It is proved that there is no algorithm to decide -compatibility for all finite ∑. If the definition is restricted to C¹ idempotent operations F_t^A , then there does exist an algorithm for compatibility. Received August 9, 2005; accepted in final form February 14, 2006.     

A note on faithful traces on a von Neumann algebra

In this short note we give some techniques for constructing, starting from asufficient family ℱ of semifinite or finite traces on a von Neumann algebraM, a new trace which is faithful.
