The laser-produced carbon plasma expanding in an ambient atmosphere in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field has
been studied by emission spectroscopy and fast photography. A double-peak structure is observed in the temporal profile of
CII and CIII transition. A sudden increase in delay observed in the second peak when the plasma expands in the concave region
of a magnetic field is attributed to Rayleigh–Taylor instability in a magnetic field. An estimate of the growth rate of the
instability inferred using intensity and velocity profile of the expanding plasma is reported.

The zero temperature phase diagram of a one-dimensional ferromagnet with cubic single ion anisotropy in an external magnetic
field is studied. The mean-field approximation and the density-matrix renormalization group method are applied. Two phases
at finite magnetic fields are identified: a canted phase with spontaneously broken symmetry and a phase with magnetization
along the magnetic field. Both methods predict that the canted phase exists even for the single-ion anisotropy strong enough
to destroy the magnetic order at zero magnetic field. In contrast to the mean-field theory, the density-matrix renormalization
group predicts a reentrant behavior for the model. The character of the phase transition at finite magnetic field has also
been considered and the critical index has been found.

A schlieren method was used to generate time-resolved images of the tunneling ionization front produced when an ultrashort
high-power laser pulse irradiates He gas. By superimposing sequential schlieren images, we obtained information about the
laser propagation and found that the ionization front propagated farther with decreasing density of the target gas. Ray-tracing
suggested that this density dependence is a result of the spatial distribution of the laser intensity.

We analyze the phase diagram of a system of spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains interacting through a zig-zag coupling,
also called zig-zag ladders. Using bosonization techniques we study how a spin-gap or more generally plateaux in magnetization
curves arise in different situations. While for coupled XXZchains, one has to deal with a recently discovered chiral perturbation, the coupling term which is present for normal ladders
is restored by an external magnetic field, dimerization or the presence of charge carriers. We then proceed with a numerical
investigation of the phase diagram of two coupled Heisenberg chains in the presence of a magnetic field. Unusual behaviour
is found for ferromagnetic coupled antiferromagnetic chains. Finally, for three (and more) legs one can choose different inequivalent
types of coupling between the chains. We find that the three-leg ladder can exhibit a spin-gap and/or non-trivial plateaux
in the magnetization curve whose appearance strongly depends on the choice of coupling.

For w-legged antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders, a long-range spin pairing order can be identified which enables the
separation of the space spanned by finite-range (covalent) valence-bond configurations into w
+1 subspaces. Since every subspace has an equivalent counter subspace connected by translational symmetry, twofold degeneracy,
breaking translational symmetry is found except for the subspace where the ground state of w = even belongs to. In terms of energy ordering, (non)degeneracy and the discontinuities introduced in the long-range spin
pairing order by topological spin defects, the differences between even and odd ladders are explained in a general and systematic
way.

The field-induced reorientation of the magnetization of ferromagnetic films is treated within the framework of many-body Green's
function theory by considering all components of the magnetization. We present a new method for the calculation of expectation
values in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the equations of motion matrix for the set of Green's functions. This
formulation allows a straightforward extension of the monolayer case to thin films with many layers and for arbitrary spin
and moreover provides a practicable procedure for numerical computation. The model Hamiltonian includes a Heisenberg term,
an external magnetic field, a second-order uniaxial single-ion anisotropy, and the magnetic dipole-dipole coupling. We utilize
the Tyablikov (RPA) decoupling for the exchange interaction terms and the Anderson-Callen decoupling for the anisotropy terms.
The dipole coupling is treated in the mean-field approximation, a procedure which we demonstrate to be a sufficiently good
approximation for realistic coupling strengths. We apply the new method to monolayers with spin and to multilayer systems with S=1. We compare some of our results to those where mean-field theory (MFT) is applied to all interactions, pointing out some
significant differences.

We study the magnetic excitation spectrum of the spin-1 chain with Hamiltonian .We focus on the range where the spin chain is in the gapped Haldane phase. The excitation spectrum and static structure factor is studied using
direct Lanczos diagonalization of small systems and density-matrix renormalization group techniques combined with the single-mode
approximation. The magnon dispersion has a minimum at until a critical value is reached at which the curvature (velocity) vanishes. Beyond this point, which is distinct from the VBS point and the Lifshitz
point, the minimum lies at an incommensurate value that goes smoothly to when approaches , the Lai-Sutherland point. The mode remains isolated from the other states: there is no evidence of spinon deconfinement
before the point .These findings explain recent observation of the behavior of the magnetization curve for .

Models generalizing the su
(2) XX spin-chain were recently introduced. These XXC models also have an underlying su
(2) structure. Their construction method is shown to generalize to the chains based on the fundamental representations of the
Am Lie algebras. Integrability of the new models is shown in the context of the quantum inverse scattering method. Their R-matrix is found and shown to yield a representation of the Hecke algebra. The diagonalization of the transfer matrices is
carried out using the algebraic Bethe Ansatz. I comment on eventual generalizations and possible links to reaction-diffusion
processes.
