Ferromagnetic spin chains of a hexagonal lattice coupled by a weak antiferromagnetic interaction J1 develop a helix arrangement if the intrachain antiferromagnetic NNN exchange J2 is sufficiently large. We show that the classical minimum energy spin configuration is an umbrella when an external magnetic field is applied. The scenario is dramatically changed by quantum fluctuations. Indeed we find that the zero point motion forces the spins in a plane containing the magnetic field so that classical expectation is deceptive for our model. Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we evaluate the low-energy spectrum (ground state and first excited states) of the anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin-one-half chain under magnetic fields. We study both homogeneous longitudinal and transversal fields as well as the influence of a transversal staggered field on the opening of a spin-gap. In a magnetic field, spin-ladders undergo two zero-temperature phase transitions at the critical fields Hc1 and Hc2. An experimental review of static and dynamical properties of spin-ladders close to these critical points is presented. The scaling functions, universal to all quantum critical points in one-dimension, are extracted from (a) the thermodynamic quantities (magnetization) and (b) the dynamical functions (NMR relaxation). A simple mapping of strongly coupled spin ladders in a magnetic field on the exactly solvable XXZ model enables to make detailed fits and gives an overall understanding of a broad class of quantum magnets in their gapless phase (between Hc1 and Hc2). In this phase, the low temperature divergence of the NMR relaxation demonstrates its Luttinger liquid nature as well as the novel quantum critical regime at higher temperature. The Heisenberg spin-S quantum antiferromagnet is studied near the large-spin limit, applying a new continuous unitary transformation which extends the usual Bogoliubov transformation to higher order in the 1/S-expansion of the Hamiltonian. This allows to diagonalize the bosonic Hamiltonian resulting from the Holstein-Primakoff representation beyond the conventional spin-wave approximation. The zero-temperature flow equations derived from the extension of the Bogoliubov transformation to order for the ground-state energy, the spin-wave velocity, and the staggered magnetization are solved exactly and yield results which are in agreement with those obtained by a perturbative treatment of the magnon interactions. We present an experimental report on the recent observation of lasing at 26.1 and 30.4 nm on the 3p 1 S 0–3s 3 P 1 [termedG((0–1)] and 3p 1 S 0–3s 1 P 1 [termedE(0–1)] transitions in Ne-like V, in which the normally weakG(0–1) transition was observed to lase more strongly than theE(0–1) transition. The experiment was performed on the Asterix IV iodine laser with a prepulse 5.23 ns before the main pulse. At a target length of about 2.5 cm, it was found that, while theG(0–1) andE(0–1) lines have comparable intensities in V, theE(0–1) line dominates spectra from Mn, Cr, Ti and Sc, which have adjacent nuclear charges. It was also found that the two lasers in V also have different temporal histories and spatial distributions. This is in contrast to the LASNEX + XRASER simulation, which predicts virtually similar temporal and spatial behavior for the two transitions. Properties of low-dimensional spin-Peierls systems are described by using a one-dimensional S =1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain linearly coupled to a single phonon mode of wave vector (whose contribution is expected to be dominant). By exact diagonalizations of small rings with up to 24 sites supplemented by a finite size scaling analysis, static and dynamical properties are investigated. Numerical evidences are given for a spontaneous discrete symmetry breaking towards a spin gapped phase with a frozen lattice dimerization. Special emphasis is put on the comparative study of the two inorganic spin-Peierls compounds CuGeO3 and NaV2O5 and the model parameters are determined from a fit of the experimental spin gaps. We predict that the spin-phonon coupling is 2 or 3 times larger in NaV2O5 than in CuGeO3. Inelastic neutron scattering spectra are calculated and similar results are found in the single phonon mode approximation and in the model including a static dimerization. In particular, the magnon S =1 branch is clearly separated from the continuum of triplet excitations by a finite gap. A new pump scheme for the realization of a practical Ar2 excimer laser operating at 126 nm has been proposed and investigated experimentally. In this scheme, pre-ionized high-pressure Ar gas was excited by an intense transversely-excited atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser irradiation. A 100-mm-long line plasma was successfully produced at an argon gas pressure of 2 MPa. The vacuum ultraviolet emission at 126 nm from the Ar2 excimers was observed and its emission characteristics were investigated under various experimental conditions. Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional bond-random S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is investigated by means of the loop-cluster-update quantum Monte-Carlo method. The random couplings are drawn from a rectangular uniform distribution. We found that even in the case of extremely broad bond distribution, the magnetic correlation decays exponentially, and the correlation length is hardly changed; namely, the Haldane phase continues to be realized. This result is accordant with that of the exact-diagonalization study, whereas it might contradict the conclusion of an analytic theory founded in a power-law bond distribution instead. The latter theory predicts that a second-order phase transition occurs at a certain critical randomness, and the correlation length diverges for sufficiently strong randomness. By using a 0.7% prepulse that precedes the main pulse by 5 ns and applying a total pump energy of 100 J or less, the J=0-1 lasing is at least one order of magnitude higher than the non-lasing background. For the 32.6-nm line of Ti, the 25.5-nm line of Fe, and the 23.1-nm line of Ni, gain coefficients of (±) 4.20.4cm-1, (±) 3.90.3cm-1, and (±) 3.60.6cm-1, respectively, were measured for 2.4-cm-long curved targets, resulting in gain–length products of ∼10. Angle-resolved spectra indicate a beam divergence of 3 mrad (FWHM), typically. The space-resolved spectra show that the J=0-1 lasing lines are emitted from an approximately 60-μm-wide (FWHM) plasma region, whereas the nearby continuum emission is produced in a considerably broader plasma region of ∼250 μm. Lasing at 25.5 nm in neon-like iron was observed at a pump power as low as 180 GW (∼9 TW/cm2), with, however, considerable shot-to-shot scatter in the absolute laser output. A new model for correlated electrons is presented which is integrable in one-dimension. The symmetry algebra of the model is the Lie superalgebra gl(2|1) which depends on a continuous free parameter. This symmetry algebra contains the pairing algebra as a subalgebra which is used to show that the model exhibits Off-Diagonal Long-Range Order in any number of dimensions.
