A high-current electron beam ion trap as an on-line charge breeder for the high precision mass measurement TITAN experiment

The precision of atomic mass measurements in a Penning trap is directly proportional to the charge state q of the ion and, hence, can be increased by using highly charged ions (HCI). For this reason, charge breeding with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) is employed at TRIUMF’s Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science (TITAN) on-line facility in Vancouver, Canada. By bombarding the injected and trapped singly charged ions with an intense beam of electrons, the charge state of the ions is rapidly increased inside the EBIT. To be compatible with the on-line requirements of short-lived isotopes, very high electron beam current densities are needed. The TITAN EBIT includes a 6 Tesla superconducting magnet and is designed to have electron beam currents and energies of up to 5 A and 60 keV, respectively. Once operational at full capacity, most species can be bred into a He-like configuration within tens of ms. Subsequently, the HCI are extracted, pass a Wien filter to reduce isobaric contamination, are cooled, and injected into a precision Penning trap for mass measurement. We will present the first results and current status of the TITAN EBIT, which has recently been moved to TRIUMF after assembly and commissioning at the Max-Planck-Institute (MPI) for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany.     

A Scanning Electron Microscopy study of water in soil

Cold stage Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with a rapid cooling technique makes it possible to investigate the water phase within unsaturated porous media. It is thought that this technique preserves the main features of the micromorphology of the water menisci as it exists in the liquid phase in soils. Saddle-shaped elements, as well as pendular rings of water, were observed with concave and convex curvatures of the water-air interface. The hydraulic conductivity of an unsaturated soil may be inferred from SEM photographs. Observations of isolated water menisci indicate the existence of an immobile water domain. The surface geometry of the water menisci was analyzed quantitatively and surface tension and capillary pressure were determined.

用高分辨＾１３Ｃ ＮＭＲ、ＦＴＩＲ等手段获得了高抗冲聚丙烯的组成和序列分布等链结构方面的信息。用ＤＳＣ、ＷＡＸＤ等方法研究了它们的结晶行为、熔融转变及晶体结构，多种方法相结合有效地表征了高抗冲聚丙烯的序列结构。     

抽吸和压力梯度在层流边界层转捩过程中的作用

用空间模式的二次稳定性理论研究了抽吸和压力梯度对边界层三维亚谐扰动流动稳定性的影响．数值结果表明，固体边界上的抽吸有明显的层流控制作用，逆压梯度则有较强的不稳定作用．     

Chromatographic characterization of thermally upgraded products from alternative fuels

An overview is presented of the analytical approaches developed by our research group over the last ten years for analysis of alternative fuel, both biomass and fossil. The alternative fuels are analyzed successively by PLC-8 (preparative liquid chromatography–group-type) fractionation and high resolution gas chromatography. Some of the possibilities for fractionation and characterization of alternative fuels are herein exemplified with sugar cane bagasse pyrolysis products.     

Limonene concentration in lemon (Citrus volkameriana) peel oil as a function of ripeness

The dependence of the limonene content of lemon (Citrus volkameriana) peel oil on the degree of ripeness of the fruit has been studied by using steam distillation and cold pressing to extract the oils from lemon fruit peel at different stages of maturation (green, greenish-yellow, and yellow-orange peel coloration). Samples of essential oils were analyzed by high resolution GC and GC-MS, using tetradecane as internal standard for quantitation. Forty components were detected; thirty eight were positively identified by comparison of their mass spectra (El, 70 eV) and Kováts retention indexes (determined using a non-logarithmic scale on capillary columns coated with both polar (DB-Wax) and non-polar (DB-1) stationary phases) with those of standards and with data reported in the literature. The limonene concentration reached a maximum level of 79.4% when the fruit was in the intermediate maturation stage characterized by greenish-yellow coloration.     

High spin chemistry underlying organic molecular magnetism: Topological symmetry rule as the first principle of spin alignment in organic open-shell systems of π-conjugation and their ions

This review paper deals with an overview of molecule-based magnetism as a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field, topological symmetry rule as the first principle of spin alignment in organic open-shell systems in the ground state, the proposal of organic through-bond 1D and 2D ferro- and superparamagnets and the detection of the first organic high-spin molecule, m-phenylenebis(phenylmethylene) in the quintet ground state (S = 2), followed by extended organic high-spin systems with π-conjugation such as aromatic hydrocarbons having S = 3, 4, 5. The paper also describes a theoretical approach to the understanding of electronic spin structures of organic high-spin molecules by invoking both Heisenberg and Hubbard model Hamiltonians, weakly interacting intramolecular high-spin systems from both experimental and theoretical sides, the spin density distribution of the first organic high-spin molecule in terms of electron- nuclear multiple resonance spectroscopy and the detection and characterization of ionic high-spin hydrocarbons, emphasizing the establishment of high spin chemistry underlying organic molecular magnetism.     

On interrelation between the internal pressure and the cohesion energy density

The question about the definition of the “internal pressure” concept is being discussed. It is shown that the previously found differential relation between the cohesion energy density and the internal pressure is one of the examples of an absolutely general interrelation between definitely connected differential functions. It is ascertained that the ratio (the internal pressure divided by the cohesion energy density) is a structuresensitive parameter inherent to the calorific (thermal) equation of a liquid state.     

Cd-Sn(0.2)-Zn三元合金高压相图的测定

 为了验证三元合金高压相图的计算结果，本文采用高压DTA方法，测定了Cd-Sn-Zn三元系中x_Sn=20 at.%截面的高压垂直截面相图，实验压力为0、0.5、1.0、1.5 GPa。测得的常压相图（p=0 GPa）中其液相线与H. J. Bray的实验结果完全相符，所得高压相图与常压相图比较，在p=1.5 GPa时低共晶点上移了大约35 K，共析组成向富锌端移动了大约8%。     

Resonant Raman scattering from a spin density wave insulator

We present a calculation of the electronic Raman cross section for the scattering of light across the energy gap of an antiferromagnetic insulator. The antiferromagnet is described in terms of a spin density wave state for the Hubbard model at half filling. We consider the coupling of the light to the current density and the inverse mass tensor on equal footing. A comparison of the cross section for different scattering geometries is given.
