Structure elucidation of triglycerides by chromatographic techniques. Part 1: Capillary GC of ozonized triglycerides

Structure determination of triglycerides according to their number of unsaturated fatty acids (N.U.F.A.) is more easily achieved after ozonolysis of their mixtures (fats and oils) than by capillary gas chromatographic analysis of the mixture as such. Analyses performed before and after ozonolysis of cocoa buttel, hazelnut oil, and a mixture of both fats illustrate the potential of this approach to the structure elucidation of triglycerides by chromatographic techniques.     

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Mixed-Ligand Ni(II) Complex of N-(1-Phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzylidene-5-pyrazolone) p-Nitrobezoylhydrazide and Pyridine

A novel mixed-ligand nickel complex, [Ni(PMBP—PNH) (Py)₃], [PMBP—PNH=N-(1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzylidene-5-pyrazolone) p-nitrobezoylhydrazide; Py = pyridine], has been synthesized by the hydrothermal method and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, thermal analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction reveals that the nickel (II) ion in the title complex is in a slightly distorted octahedral arrangement of the ONO donor atoms of primary ligand PMBP-PNH and three N-donor atoms in the secondary ligand pyridine.     

Defect clusters and precipitation/oxidation of MgO-Co1−xO solid solution

MgO and Co_1−xO powders in 9:1 and 1:9 molar ratio (denoted as M₉C₁ and M₁C₉, respectively) were sintered and homogenized at 1600°C followed by annealing at 850°C and 800°C, respectively to form defect clusters and precipitates. Analytical electron microscopic observations indicated the protoxide remained as rock salt structure with complicated planar diffraction contrast for M₉C₁ sample, however with spinel paracrystal precipitated from the M₁C₉ sample due to the assembly of charge- and volume-compensating defects of the 4:1 type, i.e., four octahedral vacant sites surrounding one Co³⁺-filled tetrahedral interstitial site. The spacing of such defect clusters is 4.5 times the lattice spacing of the average spinel structure of Mg-doped Co_3−δO₄, indicating a higher defect cluster concentration than undoped Co_3−δO₄. The {111} faulting of Mg-doped Co_3−δO₄/Co_1−xO in the annealed M₁C₉ sample implies the possible presence of zinc blend-type defect clusters with cation vacancies assembled along oxygen close packed (111) plane.

Synthesis of positively charged lipids containing a 1,3-oxathiolane cycle

Propagating transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes in liquid crystal-clad planar waveguides

ABSTRACT

In a planar dielectric waveguide, weak confinement of a propagating mode in a high index core leads to a measurable evanescent interaction with the cladding. In this work, we study the effect of a reorientable anisotropic cladding on the behaviour of Transverse Electric (TE) and Transverse Magnetic (TM) mode polarisations using a liquid crystal (LC)-clad waveguide architecture. The polarised evanescent field of a guided mode interacts with a voltage-tunable birefringent LC cladding to deflect an out-coupled beam. Experimental measurements are coupled with a theoretical framework and show good consistency with simulation results. We isolate the effect of mode confinement by changing the thickness of the high index core. Interactions between the LC index ellipsoid and the mode polarisation are probed by changing the initial alignment of the LC. Finally, we examine the difference in deflection between TE and TM modes, which incorporates both a change in mode confinement and a difference in LC index components.

Synthesis and applications of photochromic fulgides in optical information storages

A pyrryl substituted photocbromic fulgide, (1-p-methoxyphenyl-2-methyl-5-phenyl)-3-pyrryl-ethylidene (isopropylidene) succinic anhydride, was synthesized. Its chemical structure was identified by IR, 1H NMR MS and elemental analysis. The title compound was used to prepare the optical disks by the spin coating method and the vacuum evaporation method. The results of the static state examination show that the optical disks prepared with this kind of molecules possess excellent thermal stability and fatigue resistance, i.e. over 450 writing-erasing recycles, the relative contrast between writing state and erasing state remains at 40%.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Hydronium-tris-ethylenediamine-cobalt(rhodium)-μ-trichloro-nonachlorotrirhenate(III)-chloride, H₃O[MEn₃][Re₃Cl₁₂]Cl (M=Co, Rh) The chlorides H₃O[MEn₃][Re₃Cl₁₂]CI (M = Co, 1 ; Rh, 2 ) crystallize from hydrochloric acid solutions of ReCl₃ and MEn₃ · 3H₂O as deep red hexagonal columns. They are isotypic and crystallize with the hexagonal system (P6 , Z = 1; 1: a = 1010.87(3); c = 794.30(4) pm, R = 0.023, R_w = 0.016; 2: a = 1018.58(3); c = 794.74(4) pm, R = 0.026, R_w = 0.018). The anions [Re₃Cl₁₂]^3? are connected via H₃O₊ cation (C.N. 3). The large channels that run in the [001] direction contain, alternatively, the cations [MEn₃]³⁺ and the lonesome Cl^?-anions     

19F and 1H NMR spectra of halocarbons

19F NMR chemical shifts and coupling constants are reported for 215 compounds. For 77 of these compounds, 1H NMR spectral data are also given. Long-range couplings, including 8J(F,F) and 5J(F,H), are reported. The complexity of halocarbon spectra owing to the presence of rotational isomers, asymmetric centers, long-range couplings, and chlorine isotope effects are illustrated, and the methods used for analyzing such complex spectra are briefly discussed.
