Poly(S-benzyl-L -cysteine) (PBLC) is a S-benzyl derivative of the natural amino acid poly(L -cysteine). Its normal modes and their dispersion in antiparallel β-sheet conformation have been obtained within the first Brillouin zone using Wilson's G.F. matrix method, as modified by Higgs for an infinite polymeric chain. The zone center frequencies and the Urey Bradley force field have been obtained by “best fitting” the observed Fourier transform IR (FTIR) absorption bands. The characteristic features of dispersion curves such as crossing, repulsion, and exchange of character are discussed. Coinfection with the tick-transmitted pathogen Babesia spp. is becoming a serious health problem because of the erythrocyte invasion through Ixodes scapularis tick. The transmission of this protozoan by blood transfusion often results in high morbidity and mortality in recipients. A novel way to detect parasitized erythrocytes is by utilizing dielectrophoresis, an electrokinetic technique on a microfluidic platform, to improve the diagnostics of Babesia spp. The differences in the dielectric properties of Babesia spp.–infected erythrocytes versus healthy erythrocytes were exploited to design a fast and cost-effective diagnostic tool. One crucial factor for a successful diagnostic platform via dielectrophoretic separation is the dielectric characterization of Babesia-infected erythrocytes, which is investigated in this paper. The influence of medium conductivity and erythrocytes phenotype and genotype over the first crossover frequency (fco1) are used to quantify the dielectric properties of the infected cells. A sigmoidal curve was plotted via curve fitting of the single-shell model, which has been proven appropriate for parasitized cell populations where considerable cell geometry variation occurs. The difference in these curves is relevant for the separation of cells population. Microliters of sample and reagent were used throughout this experiment; the scale, results obtained, and simplicity of the system often make it very suitable for point-of-care babesiosis disease diagnostics.  相似文献

The partial oxidation reaction of CH4 led to the formation of CH3OH in the presence of Ru-porphyrin oxo complexes (denoted as POR, POR-O and POR-OH where in the case of the last two, oxygen atom and the OH group were attached to the active site, respectively), in which Ru was present on different oxidation states. The simulations were performed based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) with extended geometric and electronic structure analyses of each reaction step. Moreover, the reaction pathways were investigated in different spin states. The Spin Crossover (SCO) phenomenon was found to play an important role in the kinetics of the reaction in the presence of POR and POR-O. Harmonic Oscillator Model of Aromaticity (HOMA) index was applied for different spin states to estimate the aromaticity changes of the pyrrole rings in the Ru-porphyrin complexes. In order to characterize the nature of bonding, the Natural Bond Orbitals (NBO) analysis including the Wiberg Bond Index (WBI) and Natural Population Analysis (NPA) was carried out. Finally, the Non-Covalent Interactions (NCI) index was employed to gain insight into interactions between the components of the reaction. It was found that the non-covalent interactions cannot be neglected in the studied reaction paths.  相似文献
