Colliding stacks: A large deviations analysis

We analyze the performance of a prototypical scheme for shared storage allocation: two initially empty stacks evolving in a contiguous block of memory of size m. We treat the case in which the stacks are more likely to shrink than grow, but with the probabilities of insertion and deletion allowed to depend arbitrarily on stack height as a fraction of m. New results are obtained on the m → ∞ asymptotics of the stack collision time, and of the final stack heights. The results of Wentzell and Freidlin on the large deviations of Markov chains are used, and the relation of their formalism to the Hamiltonian formulation of classical mechanics is emphasized. Certain results on higher-order asymptotics follow from WKB expansions.     

High longitudinal selectivity of shifting multiplexing in volume holograms

High longitudinal selectivity of the shifting multiplexing with spherical reference wave is proposed and demonstrated. A simplified method based on wave optics is used for calculating the selectivity, and the result fits well the experimental measurement. Under the paraxial condition, a simple formula for the longitudinal selectivity is introduced. With use of an object lens with effective NA=0.817, we obtain that an FWHM of selectivity is as small as 1 μm.

甲基红染料掺杂的聚乙烯醇薄膜光存储特性的实验研究

用2倍频小型YAG激光(532nm)作为写入光和擦除光,用He-Ne激光器623.8nm线作为读出光,用CCD作为探测器,研究了不同写入光功率下,甲基红/聚乙烯醇(MR/PVA)薄膜光栅生长的动力学过程和不同擦除光功率下,光栅擦除的动力学过程.结合光栅生长曲线的波动现象,对光存储机制进行了新的探讨.实验发现,两写入光和读出光的功率配比为1:1:1时,可获得最大衍射效率,提出读出光对写入过程具有双重作用的物理模型,对此实验结果给出了合理的解释.     

Optical properties of a high-efficiency glass ceramic X-ray storage phosphor

The turbidity, photoluminescence, and photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) of fluorozirconate glass containing barium chloride nano- and micro-crystals have been measured for samples prepared by isochronal (70 min) annealing over a temperature range of 220–283°C, and correlated with the microstructure as determined by X-ray diffraction measurements. Crystallization of hexagonal phase barium chloride commences at around 220°C, but until 275°C the material retains excellent transparency although it displays negligible PSL. Between 275°C and 277°C, the hexagonal phase converts to the orthorhombic phase, the transparency abruptly decreases, and the PSL rises to a value of around 13% of that found for the commercial storage phosphor BaFBr:Eu. For a slightly higher temperature of 280°C, new phases appear which correspond to the onset of bulk crystallization, and at 283°C the relative PSL rises to 33%, while the transparency falls further. The trade-off between optical transparency and PSL over this narrow temperature window for X-ray imaging plate applications is briefly discussed.     

New developments in X-ray storage phosphors

We found a significant PSL effect in Eu²⁺-doped fluorozirconate glasses (ZBLAN) which were additionally doped with Br⁻ or Cl⁻ ions. The PSL is attributed to the characteristic emission of Eu²⁺ present in nano-crystallites of BaBr₂ or BaCl₂, which form in the glass upon annealing. The metastable hexagonal form of BaX₂ (X=Br,Cl) is always formed first before it is converted into the stable orthorhombic form. The particle size increases upon annealing and so does the PSL efficiency of the glass ceramic. However, there is a saturation of the PSL efficiency, which is for Br⁻ doping about 9% and for Cl⁻-doping about 80% of the Eu-doped BaFBr standard. The particle size was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TEM results show a clear tendency for bigger particles for longer annealing at the expense of its number. The particle size for the most efficient phosphor is about 100 nm.

光致变色多阶游程光存储研究

多阶游程存储是一种不改变光学系统而显著提高光存储容量和数据传输率的新方法.介绍了光致变色多阶游程存储原理和实验系统.提出了基于光致变色原理的多阶游程存储数学模型，该模型反映了记录符反射率与曝光功率、曝光时间之间的非线性关系，并在此基础上确定了光致变色多阶游程存储的写策略.基于650nm光致变色材料进行了4阶游程存储的动态实验.结果表明，实验中采用的650nm光致变色材料可用于多阶游程存储，采用的写策略能够有效地使记录信道线性化，利于采用适合线性系统的信号处理方法. 关键词： 多阶游程 光致变色 光存储 写策略     

PARTIAL VERSUS GENERAL STORAGE POLICY: COMMODITIES AND RESOURCES

This paper examines joint storage considerations when both commodities and resources can be stored, e.g., grain and water for irrigation. Results suggest that when separate agencies control public resource and commodity storage, suboptimal storage rules occur unless (i) each agency is sensitive to the policies of the other, (ii) commodity inventories are adjusted in response to prices, and (iii) resource inventories are adjusted in response to both commodity demand and resource supply conditions. For example, the common case where water storage depends on weather and reservoir conditions alone is not sufficiently general. The results imply that water management agencies that tend to be dominated by engineers and hydrological considerations need to incorporate economic considerations into decision processes.
