In the present paper, critical conditions for determining when a circular arc will be a relative minimal-cost path are derived. The following results are announced here. Two generalizations for the location of the endpoints of a road are studied in a circular city model treated previously by one of the authors. The existence of optimal cost routes has been proven. This paper demonstrates the power of the functional-calculus definition oflinear fractional (pseudo-)differential operators via generalised Fouriertransforms.Firstly, we describe in detail how to get global causal solutions of linearfractional differential equations via this calculus. The solutions arerepresented as convolutions of the input functions with the related impulseresponses. The suggested method via residue calculus separates an impulseresponse automatically into an exponentially damped (possibly oscillatory)part and a `slow' relaxation. If an impulse response is stable it becomesautomatically causal, otherwise one has to add a homogeneous solution to getcausality.Secondly, we present examples and, moreover, verify the approach alongexperiments on viscolelastic rods. The quality of the method as an effectivefew-parameter model is impressively demonstrated: the chosen referenceexample PTFE (Teflon) shows that in contrast to standard classical modelsour model describes the behaviour in a wide frequency range within theaccuracy of the measurement. A Boutet de Monvel type calculus is developed for boundary value problems on (possibly) noncompact manifolds. It is based on a class of weighted symbols and Sobolev spaces. If the underlying manifold is compact, one recovers the standard calculus. The following is proven:
- 1 The algebra G of Green operators of order and type zero is a spectrally invariant Fréchet subalgebra of L(H), H a suitable Hilbert space, i. e.,
- 2 Focusing on the elements of order and type zero is no restriction since there are order reducing operators within the calculus.
- 3 There is a necessary and sufficient criterion for the Fredholm property of boundary value problems, based on the invertibility of symbols modulo lower order symbols, and
- 4 There is a holomorphic functional calculus for the elements of G in several complex variables.

Using the functional calculus for a normal operator, we provide a result for generalized Toeplitz operators, analogous to the theorem of Axler and Shields on harmonic extensions of the disc algebra. Besides that result, we prove that if is an injective subnormal weighted shift, then any two nontrivial subspaces invariant under cannot be orthogonal to each other. Then we show that the -algebra generated by and the identity operator contains all the compact operators as its commutator ideal, and we give a characterization of that -algebra in terms of generalized Toeplitz operators. Motivated by these results, we further obtain their several-variable analogues, which generalize and unify Coburn's theorems for the Hardy space and the Bergman space of the unit ball.
