The Lattice of Interpretability Types of Cantor Varieties

For integers 1 m < n, a Cantor variety with m basic n-ary operations _i and n basic m-ary operations _k is a variety of algebras defined by identities _k(₁( ), ... , _m( )) = _k and i(₁( ), ... ,_n( )) = y _i, where = (x ₁., ... , x _n) and = (y ₁, ... , y _m). We prove that interpretability types of Cantor varieties form a distributive lattice, , which is dual to the direct product ₁ × ₂ of a lattice, ₁, of positive integers respecting the natural linear ordering and a lattice, ₂, of positive integers with divisibility. The lattice is an upper subsemilattice of the lattice of all interpretability types of varieties of algebras.     

On the Irreducibility of Commuting Varieties Associated with Involutions of Simple Lie Algebras

Let be a reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and an arbitrary -grading. We consider the variety , which is called the commuting variety associated with the -grading. Earlier it was proved by the author that is irreducible, if the -grading is of maximal rank. Now we show that is irreducible for and (E₆,F₄). In the case of symmetric pairs of rank one, we show that the number of irreducible components of is equal to that of nonzero non--regular nilpotent G ₀-orbits in . We also discuss a general problem of the irreducibility of commuting varieties.     

An Implementation for the Algorithm of Janet bases of Linear Differential Ideals in the Maple System

In this paper, an algorithm for computing the Janet bases of linear differential equations is described, which is the differential analogue of the algorithm JanetBasis improved by Gerdt. An implementation of the algorithm in Maple is given. The implemented algorithm includes some subalgorithms: Janet division,Pommaret division, the judgement of involutive divisor and reducible, the judgement of conventional divisor and reducible, involutive normal form and conventional normal form, involutive autoreduction and conventional autoreduction, PJ-autoreduction and so on. As an application, the Janet Bases of the determining system of classical Lie symmetries of some partial differential equations are obtained using our package.     

Cohomology of line bundles on Schubert varieties: The rank two case

In this paper we describe vanishing and non-vanishing of cohomology of “most” line bundles over Schubert subvarieties of flag varieties for rank 2 semisimple algebraic groups.     

Polygonal cycles in higher Chow groups of Jacobians

The aim of this paper is to construct non-trivial cycles in the first higher Chow group of the Jacobian of a curve having special torsion points. The basic tool is to compute the analogue of the Griffiths infinitesimal invariant of the natural normal function defined by the cycle as the curve moves in the corresponding moduli space. Korn's inequalities for piecewise vector fields

Korn's inequalities for piecewise vector fields are established. They can be applied to classical nonconforming finite element methods, mortar methods and discontinuous Galerkin methods.

     

Local behaviour of polynomials

In this paper we study the local behaviour of a trigonometric polynomial around any of its zeros in terms of its estimated values at an adequate number of freely chosen points in . The freedom in the choice of sample points makes our results particularly convenient for numerical calculations. Analogous results for polynomials of the form are also proved.

     

Algebraic -actions of entropy rank one

We investigate algebraic -actions of entropy rank one, namely those for which each element has finite entropy. Such actions can be completely described in terms of diagonal actions on products of local fields using standard adelic machinery. This leads to numerous alternative characterizations of entropy rank one, both geometric and algebraic. We then compute the measure entropy of a class of skew products, where the fiber maps are elements from an algebraic -action of entropy rank one. This leads, via the relative variational principle, to a formula for the topological entropy of continuous skew products as the maximum of a finite number of topological pressures. We use this to settle a conjecture concerning the relational entropy of commuting toral automorphisms.

     

On the Ideals of Secant Varieties of Segre Varieties

We establish basic techniques for determining the ideals of secant varieties of Segre varieties.We solve a conjecture of Garcia, Stillman, and Sturmfels on the generators of the ideal of the first secant variety in the case of three factors and solve the conjecture set-theoretically for an arbitrary number of factors. We determine the low degree components of the ideals of secant varieties of small dimension in a few cases.
