A combinatorial proof of the Kronecker–Weber Theorem in positive characteristic

In this paper we present a combinatorial proof of the Kronecker–Weber Theorem for global fields of positive characteristic. The main tools are the use of Witt vectors and their arithmetic developed by H.L. Schmid. The key result is to obtain, using counting arguments, how many p-cyclic extensions exist of fixed degree and bounded conductor where only one prime ramifies. We then compare this number with the number of subextensions of cyclotomic function fields of the same type and verify that these two numbers are the same.     

Dunkl’s theory and best approximation by entire functions of exponential type in L 2-metric with power weight

In this paper, we study the sharp Jackson inequality for the best approximation of f ∈L2,κ(Rd) by a subspace E2κ(σ)(SE2κ(σ)), which is a subspace of entire functions of exponential type(spherical exponential type) at most σ. Here L2,κ(Rd) denotes the space of all d-variate functions f endowed with the L2-norm with the weight v2κ(x) =ξ∈R, which is defined by a positive+|(ξ, x)|κ(ξ)subsystem R+ of a finite root system RRdand a function κ(ξ) : R → R+ invariant under the reflection group G(R) generated by R. In the case G(R) = Zd2, we get some exact results. Moreover,the deviation of best approximation by the subspace E2κ(σ)(SE2κ(σ)) of some class of the smooth functions in the space L2,κ(Rd) is obtained.     

Geometric and topological rigidity for compact submanifolds of odd dimension

We investigate rigidity problems for odd-dimensional compact submanifolds.We show that if Mn(n 5)is an odd-dimensional compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in Sn+p,and if RicM(n-2-1n)(1+H2)and Hδn,whereδn is an explicit positive constant depending only on n,then M is a totally umbilical sphere.Here H is the mean curvature of M.Moreover,we prove that if Mn(n 5)is an odd-dimensional compact submanifold in the space form Fn+p(c)with c 0,and if RicM(n-2-εn)(c+H2),whereεn is an explicit positive constant depending only on n,then M is homeomorphic to a sphere.     

Stabilization of 4-manifolds

The complex surface X obtained by 8 points blown up on CP2 and Barlow’s surface Y are homeomorphic,but not diffeomorphic.Using the Gromov-Witten invariant Ruan showed that the stabilized manifolds X×S2and Y×S2are not deformation equivalent.In this note,we show that the stabilized manifolds X×S1and Y×S1are diffeomorphic and non-deformation equivalent in cosymplectic sense.     

On the Structure of the Units of Group Algebra of Dihedral Group

In this paper, we completely determine the structure of the unit group of the group algebra of some dihedral groups D2 n over the finite field Fpk, where p is a prime.     

A Note on the Connectedness of the Invertible Group of a Nest Algebra

The connectedness of the invertibles question for arbitrary nest has been reduced to the case of the lower triangular operators with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis en for n 1. For each f ∈ H∞, let Tf be the Toeplitz operator. In this paper we prove that Tf can be connected to the identity through a path in the invertible group of the lower triangular operators if f satisfies certain conditions.     

Hierarchically penalized additive hazards model with diverging number of parameters

In many applications,covariates can be naturally grouped.For example,for gene expression data analysis,genes belonging to the same pathway might be viewed as a group.This paper studies variable selection problem for censored survival data in the additive hazards model when covariates are grouped.A hierarchical regularization method is proposed to simultaneously estimate parameters and select important variables at both the group level and the within-group level.For the situations in which the number of parameters tends to∞as the sample size increases,we establish an oracle property and asymptotic normality property of the proposed estimators.Numerical results indicate that the hierarchically penalized method performs better than some existing methods such as lasso,smoothly clipped absolute deviation(SCAD)and adaptive lasso.     

Compact groups of positive operators on Banach lattices

In this paper, we study groups of positive operators on Banach lattices. If a certain factorization property holds for the elements of such a group, the group has a homomorphic image in the isometric positive operators which has the same invariant ideals as the original group. If the group is compact in the strong operator topology, it equals a group of isometric positive operators conjugated by a single central lattice automorphism, provided an additional technical assumption is satisfied, for which we have only examples. We obtain a characterization of positive representations of a group with compact image in the strong operator topology, and use this for normalized symmetric Banach sequence spaces to prove an ordered version of the decomposition theorem for unitary representations of compact groups. Applications concerning spaces of continuous functions are also considered.
