Barrier asymmetry and the mm-wave performance of resonant tunnel diodes

The effects of barrier asymmetry in a resonant tunnel diode (RTD) on the frequency response of the negative dynamical resistance are described for (i) DC biasing in the positive differential resistance (PDR) region and (ii) DC biasing in the negative differential resistance (NDR) region. Collector barriers more transparent than emitter barriers enhance performance for NDR DC-biased devices. Asymmetry has no apparent effect for PDR DC-biased devices operating in transit time mode.     

Comparing Fleming-Viot and Dawson-Watanabe processes

Fleming-Viot processes and Dawson-Watanabe processes are two classes of “superprocesses” that have received a great deal of attention in recent years. These processes have many properties in common. In this paper, we prove a result that helps to explain why this is so. It allows one to prove certain theorems for one class when they are true for the other. More specifically, we show that product moments of a Fleming-Viot process can be bounded above by the corresponding moments of the Dawson-Watanabe process with the same “underlying particle motion”, and vice versa except for a multiplicative constant. As an application, we establish existence and continuity properties of local time for certain Fleming-Viot processes.

The Direction of Time: From the Global Arrow to the Local Arrow

In this paper we discuss the traditional approaches to the problem of the arrow of time. On the basis of this discussion we adopt a global and nonentropic approach, according to which the arrow of time has a global origin and is an intrinsic, geometrical feature of space-time. Finally, we show how the global arrow is translated into local terms as a local time-asymmetric flux of energy.

Choosing a random spanning subtree: a case study

Broder⁽⁴⁾ has suggested a stochastic algorithm for generating a random spanning subtree of a graph. This paper studies this algorithm for a special class of graphs. A complete spectral decomposition of the associated Markov chain is given. The analysis available from this is compared to stopping-time techniques and purely geometric bounds on the second eigenvalue.
