This paper solves a utility maximization problem under utility-based shortfall risk constraint, by proposing an approach using Lagrange multiplier and convex duality. Under mild conditions on the asymptotic elasticity of the utility function and the loss function, we find an optimal wealth process for the constrained problem and characterize the bi-dual relation between the respective value functions of the constrained problem and its dual. This approach applies to both complete and incomplete markets. Moreover, the extension to more complicated cases is illustrated by solving the problem with a consumption process added. Finally, we give an example of utility and loss functions in the Black–Scholes market where the solutions have explicit forms.  相似文献

In this article, we analyze the optimal consumption and investment policy of an agent who has a quadratic felicity function and faces a subsistence consumption constraint. The agent's optimal investment in the risky asset increases linearly for low wealth levels. Risk taking continues to increase at a decreasing rate for wealth levels higher than subsistence wealth until it hits a maximum at a certain wealth level, and declines for wealth levels above this threshold. Further, the agent has a bliss level of consumption, since if an agent consumes more than this level she will suffer utility loss. Eventually her risk taking becomes zero at a wealth level which supports her bliss consumption.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a general optimal consumption-portfolio selection problem of an infinitely-lived agent whose consumption rate process is subject to subsistence constraints before retirement. That is, her consumption rate should be greater than or equal to some positive constant before retirement. We integrate three optimal decisions which are the optimal consumption, the optimal investment choice and the optimal stopping problem in which the agent chooses her retirement time in one model. We obtain the explicit forms of optimal policies using a martingale method and a variational inequality arising from the dual function of the optimal stopping problem. We treat the optimal retirement time as the first hitting time when her wealth exceeds a certain wealth level which will be determined by a free boundary value problem and duality approaches. We also derive closed forms of the optimal wealth processes before and after retirement. Some numerical examples are presented for the case of constant relative risk aversion (CRRA) utility class.  相似文献

Heuristic algorithms for the cardinality constrained efficient frontier   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper examines the application of genetic algorithm, tabu search and simulated annealing metaheuristic approaches to finding the cardinality constrained efficient frontier that arises in financial portfolio optimisation. We consider the mean-variance model of Markowitz as extended to include the discrete restrictions of buy-in thresholds and cardinality constraints. Computational results are reported for publicly available data sets drawn from seven major market indices involving up to 1318 assets. Our results are compared with previous results given in the literature illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed metaheuristics in terms of solution quality and computation time.  相似文献

A fundamental principle of modern portfolio theory is that comparisons between portfolios are generally made using two criteria, corresponding to the first two moments of return distributions, namely the expected return and portfolio variance. According to this model and according to most of the portfolio models derived from the stochastic dominance approach, the group of portfolios open to comparisons is divided into two parts: on the one hand there are the efficient portfolios (those that are not dominated by any other portfolio in the group), and on the other, those that are dominated. In other words, these models do not solve for one optimal portfolio, but rather solve for an efficient set of portfolios, among which the investor must choose, given his preference system. One criticism over these models, which has often been addressed both by practitioners and academics, is that they fail to embody the objectives of the decision maker (DM), through the various stages of the decision process. Our purpose in this article is to present an integrated and innovative methodological approach for the construction and selection of equity portfolios, which will take into account the inherent multidimensional nature of the problem, while allowing the DM to incorporate his preferences in the decision process. The proposed approach, which grounds its basis on the field of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) and more specifically on multiobjective mathematical programming (MMP), is implemented in the IPSSIS (Integrated Portfolio Synthesis and Selection Information System) decision support system (DSS). The validity of the proposed approach is tested through an illustrative application in the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE).  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to apply the concept of robust optimization introduced by Bel-Tal and Nemirovski to the portfolio selection problems based on multi-stage scenario trees. The objective of our portfolio selection is to maximize an expected utility function value (or equivalently, to minimize an expected disutility function value) as in a classical stochastic programming problem, except that we allow for ambiguities to exist in the probability distributions along the scenario tree. We show that such a problem can be formulated as a finite convex program in the conic form, on which general convex optimization techniques can be applied. In particular, if there is no short-selling, and the disutility function takes the form of semi-variance downside risk, and all the parameter ambiguity sets are ellipsoidal, then the problem becomes a second order cone program, thus tractable. We use SeDuMi to solve the resulting robust portfolio selection problem, and the simulation results show that the robust consideration helps to reduce the variability of the optimal values caused by the parameter ambiguity.  相似文献

A major inconvenience of the traditional approach in portfolio choice, based upon historical information, is its inability to anticipate sudden changes of price tendencies. Introducing information about future behavior of the assets fundamentals may help to make more appropriate choices. However, the specification and parameterization of a model linking this exogenous information to the asset prices is not straightforward. Classification trees can be used to construct partitions of assets of forecasted similar behavior. We analyze the performance of this approach and apply it to different sectors of the S&P 500.   相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the Merton portfolio management problem in the context of non-exponential discounting. This gives rise to time-inconsistency of the decision-maker. If the decision-maker at time t = 0 can commit her successors, she can choose the policy that is optimal from her point of view, and constrain the others to abide by it, although they do not see it as optimal for them. If there is no commitment mechanism, one must seek a subgame-perfect equilibrium policy between the successive decision-makers. In the line of the earlier work by Ekeland and Lazrak (Preprint, 2006) we give a precise definition of equilibrium policies in the context of the portfolio management problem, with finite horizon. We characterize them by a system of partial differential equations, and establish their existence in the case of CRRA utility. An explicit solution is provided for the case of logarithmic utility. We also investigate the infinite-horizon case and provide two different equilibrium policies for CRRA utility (in contrast with the case of exponential discounting, where there is only one optimal policy). Some of our results are proved under the assumption that the discount function h(t) is a linear combination of two exponentials, or is the product of an exponential by a linear function. I. A portfolio problem with integer variables can facilitate the use of complex models, including models containing discrete asset values, transaction costs, and logical constraints. This study proposes a distributed algorithm for solving a portfolio program to obtain a global optimum. For a portfolio problem with n integer variables, the objective function first is converted into an ellipse function containing n separated quadratic terms. Next, the problem is decomposed into m equal-size separable programming problems solvable by a distributed computation system composed of m personal computers linked via the Internet. The numerical examples illustrate that the proposed method can obtain the global optimum effectively for large scale portfolio problems involving integral variables.  相似文献
