Recent evidence by Campbell et al. [J.Y. Campbell, M. Lettau B.G. Malkiel, Y. Xu, Have individual stocks become more volatile? An empirical exploration of idiosyncratic risk, The Journal of Finance (February) (2001)] shows an increase in firm-level volatility and a decline of the correlation among stock returns in the US. In relation to the Euro-Area stock markets, we find that both aggregate firm-level volatility and average stock market correlation have trended upwards.We estimate a linear model of the market risk–return relationship nested in an EGARCH(1, 1)-M model for conditional second moments. We then show that traditional estimates of the conditional risk–return relationship, that use ex-post excess-returns as the conditioning information set, lead to joint tests of the theoretical model (usually the ICAPM) and of the Efficient Market Hypothesis in its strong form.To overcome this problem we propose alternative measures of expected market risk based on implied volatility extracted from traded option prices and we discuss the conditions under which implied volatility depends solely on expected risk. We then regress market excess-returns on lagged market implied variance computed from implied market volatility to estimate the relationship between expected market excess-returns and expected market risk.We investigate whether, as predicted by the ICAPM, the expected market risk is the main factor in explaining the market risk premium and the latter is independent of aggregate idiosyncratic risk. 相似文献

Starting from the wave normal tracing treatment in the Savart polariscope that relates the Jones matrix to its transmission performance,this paper establishes a simple and effective model for the Jones matrix at an arbitrary inci-dence in the spatial domain.Analytical expressions of all the matrix components are determined with the consideration of all the main impact factors.This model needs only a few parameters hence it is convenient to be employed to evaluate the propagation performance of any birefringent optical system.The simulated results obtained with it demonstrate that this model gives a precise representation of the characteristic of light propagation in the Savart polariscope.This would provide useful suggestions for the design,calibration,and performance improvement of any other birefringent polarisation element and optical system. 相似文献

A new conformational search method, molecular dynamics–minimization (MDM), is proposed, which combines a molecular dynamics sampling strategy with energy minimizations in the search for low-energy molecular structures. This new method is applied to the search for low energy configurations of clusters of coulombic charges on a unit sphere, Lennard–Jones clusters, and water clusters. The MDM method is shown to be efficient in finding the lowest energy configurations of these clusters. A closer comparison of MDM with alternative conformational search methods on Lennard–Jones clusters shows that, although MDM is not as efficient as the Monte Carlo–minimization method in locating the global energy minima, it is more efficient than the diffusion equation method and the method of minimization from randomly generated structures. Given the versatility of the molecular dynamics sampling strategy in comparison to Monte Carlo in treating molecular complexes or molecules in explicit solution, one anticipates that the MDM method could be profitably applied to conformational search problems where the number of degrees of freedom is much greater. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
