On a Construction of Fast Direct Solvers

Fast direct solvers for the Poisson equation with homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on special triangles and tetrahedra are constructed. The domain given is extended by symmetrization or skew symmetrization onto a rectangle or a rectangular parallelepiped and a fast direct solver is used there. All extendable domains are found. Eigenproblems are also considered.     

Galerkin Approximations for the Linear Parabolic Equation with the Third Boundary Condition

We solve a linear parabolic equation in ^d , d 1, with the third nonhomogeneous boundary condition using the finite element method for discretization in space, and the -method for discretization in time. The convergence of both, the semidiscrete approximations and the fully discretized ones, is analysed. The proofs are based on a generalization of the idea of the elliptic projection. The rate of convergence is derived also for variable time step-sizes.     

A free boundary problem for a fluid flow in a heterogeneous porous medium

In this paper we study the problem of seepage of a fluid through a porous medium, assuming the flow governed by a nonlinear Darcy law and nonlinear leaky boundary conditions. We prove the continuity of the free boundary and the existence and uniqueness of minimal and maximal solutions. We also prove the uniqueness of theS ₃-connected solution in various situations.     

一类非线性m-点边值问题正解的存在性

设α∈C[0,1],b∈C([0,1],(-∞,0)).设φ(t)为线性边值问题 u″+a(t)u′+b(t)u=0, u′(0)=0,u(1)=1的唯一正解.本文研究非线性二阶常微分方程m-点边值问题 u″+a(t)u′+b(t)u+h(t)f(u)=0, u′(0)=0,u(1)-sum from i=1 to(m-2)((a_i)u(ξ_i))=0正解的存在性.其中ξ_i∈(0,1),a_i∈(0,∞)为满足∑_(i=1)~(m-2)a_iφ_1(ξ_i)<1的常数,i∈{1,…,m-2}.通过运用锥上的不动点定理,在f超线性增长或次线性增长的前提下证明了正解的存在性结果.     

Approximation and Prediction of the Numerical Solution of Some Burgers Problems

The Aitken's ²-prediction of Brezinski has already been used by Morandi Cecchi et al. in order to compute a numerical approximation of the solution of a parabolic initial-boundary value problem. This method consists in two consecutive steps: the first one is the approximation with a finite elements method, where the solution of the involved nonlinear system is computed by Gauss–Seidel method; the second one is a prediction of further terms with Aitken's ²-process. By comparison with this method, we use other methods of prediction in another way. First, we consider a generalization of ²-prediction, the so-called -prediction. In this paper, we only use vector prediction which is more stable than the scalar one. Then, the methods of prediction presented can be used in order to predict the starting vector of the Gauss–Seidel method.     

Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions: What is in between?

Given an admissible measure μ on where is an open set, we define a realization of the Laplacian in with general Robin boundary conditions and we show that generates a holomorphic C ₀ -semigroup on which is sandwiched by the Dirichlet Laplacian and the Neumann Laplacian semigroups. Moreover, under a locality and a regularity assumption, the generator of each sandwiched semigroup is of the form . We also show that if contains smooth functions, then μ is of the form (where σ is the (n-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure and β a positive measurable bounded function on ); i.e. we have the classical Robin boundary conditions. A brief summary of the development on Kadison‘s famous problems (1967) is given. A new set of problems in von Neumann algebras is listed.     

Asymptotic Expansions of the Heat Kernel of the Laplacian for General Annular Bounded Domains with Robin Boundary Conditions：Further Results

The asymptotic expansions of the trace of the heat kernel θ(t)=∑^∞v=1^exp(-tλv) for small positive t,where {λv} are the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian -△n=-∑^ni=1(D/Dx^1)^2 in R^2(n=2 or 3),are studied for a general annular bounded domain Ω with a smooth inner boundary DΩ1 and a smooth outer boundary DΩ2,where a finite number of piecewise smooth Robin boundary conditions(D/Dnj γh)Ф=0 on the components Гj(j= 1,...,m) of (DΩ1 and on the components Гj (j=k 1,…,m) of of DΩ2 are considered such that DΩl=U^kj=lГj and DΩ2= U^m=k 1Гj and where the coefficients γj(j=1,...,m) are piecewise smooth positive functions. Some applications of θ(t) for an ideal gas enclosed in the general annular bounded domain Ω are given. Further results are also obtained.
