The initial value problems for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and modified KdV (mKdV) equations under periodic and decaying boundary conditions are considered. These initial value problems are shown to be globally well-posed in all -based Sobolev spaces where local well-posedness is presently known, apart from the endpoint for mKdV and the endpoint for KdV. The result for KdV relies on a new method for constructing almost conserved quantities using multilinear harmonic analysis and the available local-in-time theory. Miura's transformation is used to show that global well-posedness of modified KdV is implied by global well-posedness of the standard KdV equation.

In this article algorithms are developed for nonlinear -term Courant element approximation of functions in ( ) on bounded polygonal domains in . Redundant collections of Courant elements, which are generated by multilevel nested triangulations allowing arbitrarily sharp angles, are investigated. Scalable algorithms are derived for nonlinear approximation which both capture the rate of the best approximation and provide the basis for numerical implementation. Simple thresholding criteria enable approximation of a target function to optimally high asymptotic rates which are determined and automatically achieved by the inherent smoothness of . The algorithms provide direct approximation estimates and permit utilization of the general Jackson-Bernstein machinery to characterize -term Courant element approximation in terms of a scale of smoothness spaces (-spaces) which govern the approximation rates.

This paper deals with quasilinear elliptic differential inclusions defined in all of N and governed in general by a nonpotential quasilinear elliptic operator of the Leray–Lions type and a multivalued term in form of a (nonmonotone) state-dependent subdifferential. We prove the existence of entire extremal solutions within a sector of an ordered pair of appropriately defined upper and lower solutions without imposing any condition at infinity. Therefore, standard variational methods cannot be applied here. Two explicit error representation formulas are derived for degenerate parabolic PDEs, which are based on evaluating a parabolic residual in negative norms. The resulting upper bounds are valid for any numerical method, and rely on regularity properties of solutions of a dual parabolic problem in nondivergence form with vanishing diffusion coefficient. They are applied to a practical space-time discretization consisting of piecewise linear finite elements over highly graded unstructured meshes, and backward finite differences with varying time-steps. Two rigorous a posteriori error estimates are derived for this scheme, and used in designing an efficient adaptive algorithm, which equidistributes space and time discretization errors via refinement/coarsening. A simulation finally compares the behavior of the rigorous a posteriori error estimators with a heuristic approach, and hints at the potentials and reliability of the proposed method.
