Commutativity conditions for rings: 1950–2005

During the last 55 years there have been many results concerning conditions that force a ring to be commutative. These results were stimulated by Jacobson's famous result and were extensively developed by Herstein. This paper will survey the area by organizing the results according to whether they come from variations on Herstein's conditions, depend on general polynomial conditions, depend on the presence of a derivation, or whether a ring has special properties that make commutativity more easily accessible. Finally, the most recent conditions concern product sets and lead to results in a new area of inquiry.

We give a formula for the jump at zero of the spectral shift function associated with Schrödinger operator on manifolds with conical ends. We show that, according to its decay, a zero energy resonant state has a non-integer contribution.     

Extensions of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces

The extension of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces is studied and linked to the extension of a special class of Banach Lie algebras. The case of W∗-algebras is given particular attention. Semidirect products and the extension of the restricted Banach Lie-Poisson space by the Banach Lie-Poisson space of compact operators are given as examples.     

Subword complexes in Coxeter groups

Let (Π,Σ) be a Coxeter system. An ordered list of elements in Σ and an element in Π determine a subword complex, as introduced in Knutson and Miller (Ann. of Math. (2) (2003), to appear). Subword complexes are demonstrated here to be homeomorphic to balls or spheres, and their Hilbert series are shown to reflect combinatorial properties of reduced expressions in Coxeter groups. Two formulae for double Grothendieck polynomials, one of which appeared in Fomin and Kirillov (Proceedings of the Sixth Conference in Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, DIMACS, 1994, pp. 183-190), are recovered in the context of simplicial topology for subword complexes. Some open questions related to subword complexes are presented.     

On the Besov regularity of conformal maps and layer potentials on nonsmooth domains

We study the Besov regularity of conformal mappings for domains with rough boundary based on the well-posedness for the Dirichlet problem with Besov data. Also, sharp invertibility results for the classical layer potential operators on Sobolev-Besov spaces on the boundary of curvilinear polygons are obtained.     

Diffraction of transverse horizontal waves in Fibonacci piezoelectric superlattices

The transfer matrix and global matrix techniques are used in the analysis of diffraction of transverse horizontal waves in piezoelectric superlattices. The system is composed of a set of different piezoelectric layers with quasiperiodic structure according to the Fibonacci sequence. The diffraction spectrum of different configurations of piezoelectric Fibonacci structures is studied. Numerical results for the diffraction spectrum for the piezoelectric Fibonacci superlattice are obtained and a comparison between the results of the transfer and global matrix methods is given, exhibiting the advantage of the latter.     

A new joint model for longitudinal and survival data with a cure fraction

We develop a new joint cure rate model for longitudinal and survival data. The model allows for multiple longitudinal markers as well as a cure structure for the survival component based on the promotion time cure rate model, as described in Ibrahim et al. (Bayesian Survival Analysis, Springer, New York, 2001). Several characteristics and properties of the new model are discussed and examined. A real dataset from a melanoma clinical trial is given to demonstrate the methodology.     

Numerosities of labelled sets: a new way of counting

The notions of “labelled set” and “numerosity” are introduced to generalize the counting process of finite sets. The resulting numbers, called numerosities, are then used to develop nonstandard analysis. The existence of a numerosity function is equivalent to the existence of a selective ultrafilter, hence it is independent of the axioms of ZFC.     

Measurability implies continuity for solutions of functional equations - even with few variables

Summary. We prove that - under certain conditions - measurable solutions $f$ of the functional equation $f(x)=h(x,y,f(g_{1}(x,y)),\ldots,f(g_{n}(x,y))),\quad(x,y)\in D \subset \mathbb{R}^{s} \times \mathbb{R}^{l}$ are continuous, even if $1\le l\le s$. As a tool we introduce new classes of functions which - roughly speaking - interpolate between continuous and Lebesgue measurable functions. Connection between these classes are also investigated.     

Dynamic frictionless contact with adhesion

A model for the dynamic, adhesive, frictionless contact between a viscoelastic body and a deformable foundation is described. The adhesion process is modeled by a bonding field on the contact surface. The contact is described by a modified normal compliance condition. The tangential shear due to the bonding field is included. The problem is formulated as a coupled system of a variational equality for the displacements and a differential equation for the bonding field. The existence of a unique weak solution for the problem is established, together with a partial regularity result. The existence proof proceeds by construction of an appropriate mapping which is shown to be a contraction on a Hilbert space.
