Constructions of rank five geometries for the Mathieu group M 22

We construct nine rank five incidence geometries that are firm and residually connected and on which the Mathieu group M²² acts flag-transitively. The constructions use mainly objects arising from the Steiner systemS(3, 6, 22). One of these geometries was constructed by Meixner and Pasini in [10]. Three of them are obtained from the geometry of Meixner and Pasini using doubling (see [8] or [12]) or similar constructions. The remaining five are new and four of them have a star diagram. These latter four geometries are constructed using special partitions of the 22 points of the Steiner system S(3, 6, 22).     

Bundles, Handcuffs, and Local Freedom

We answer a question of J. Anderson's by producing infinitely many commensurability classes of fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose fundamental groups contain subgroups that are locally free and not free. These manifolds are obtained by performing 0–surgery on a collection of knots with the same properties.     

Tangent circle bundles admit positive open book decompositions along arbitrary links

In the present paper we generalize the divide lying in the unit disk, introduced by A'Campo, to compact, oriented, smooth surfaces, and prove a fibration theorem for generalized divides. As a consequence, we will show that, for any link L in the tangent circle bundle Y to the compact surface, there exists an additional knot K such that the link L∪K is the binding of a “positive” open book decomposition of Y.     

Zero-divisor graphs, von Neumann regular rings, and Boolean algebras

For a commutative ring R with set of zero-divisors Z(R), the zero-divisor graph of R is Γ(R)=Z(R)−{0}, with distinct vertices x and y adjacent if and only if xy=0. In this paper, we show that Γ(T(R)) and Γ(R) are isomorphic as graphs, where T(R) is the total quotient ring of R, and that Γ(R) is uniquely complemented if and only if either T(R) is von Neumann regular or Γ(R) is a star graph. We also investigate which cardinal numbers can arise as orders of equivalence classes (related to annihilator conditions) in a von Neumann regular ring.     

Degree bounds for syzygies of invariants

Suppose that G is a linearly reductive group. Good degree bounds for generators of invariant rings were given in (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 129 (4) (2001) 955). Here we study minimal free resolutions of invariant rings. For finite linearly reductive groups G it was recently shown in (Adv. Math. 156 (1) (2000) 23, Electron Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 7 (2001) 5, Adv. Math. 172 (2002) 151) that rings of invariants are generated in degree at most the group order |G|. In characteristic 0 this degree bound is a classical result by Emmy Noether (see Math. Ann. 77 (1916) 89). Given an invariant ring of a finite linearly reductive group G, we prove that the ideal of relations of a minimal set of generators is generated in degree at most ?2|G|.     

A Bitangential Interpolation Problem on the Closed Unit Ball for Multipliers of the Arveson Space

We solve a bitangential interpolation problem for contractive multipliers on the Arveson space with an arbitrary interpolating set in the closed unit ball . The solvability criterion is established in terms of positive kernels. The set of all solutions is parametrized by a Redheffer transform. Submitted: February 2, 2002.     

On essential extensions of reduced rings and domains

A ring is said to be a left essential extension of a reduced ring (domain) if it contains a left ideal which is a reduced ring (domain) and intersects nontrivially every nonzero twosided ideal of the ring. We prove that every ring which is a left essential extension of a reduced ring is a subdirect sum of rings which are essential extensions of domains, but the converse implication does not hold. We give some applications of this result and discuss several related questions.Received: 6 January 2003     

A New Bibenzyl Glycoside from Dendrobium moniliforme

A new bibenzyl glycoside has been isolated from the stems of Dendrobium moniliforme (L.) Sw.(Orchidaceas).Its structure has been identified on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical methods.     

End effects for pre-stressed and pre-polarized piezoelectric solids in anti-plane shear

This paper is concerned with investigation of the influence of pre-stress and pre-polarization on the decay of Saint-Venant end effects in piezoelectric solids. This issue is examined within the framework of incremental anti-plane shear states for prestressed and prepolarized solids. Attention is confined to a specific class of materials, namely those of hexagonal 6mm or 4mm symmetry. It is shown that the mechanical and electrical fields uncouple in this case, and the governing system of coupled second-order linear partial differential equations uncouple to a single homogeneous second-order equation with constant coefficients for the displacement and a Poisson equation for the electric potential. The exact decay rate for mechanical and electrical end effects is determined and the influence of pre-stress and pre-polarization is assessed. Motivation for this work arises from the current rapid developments in smart materials technology.     

Morphology and spectral properties of thin films of benzoxazole derivatives of biphenyl

We have studied the spectral properties and morphology of thin films (TVD films) formed by thermal vacuum deposition of 4,4′-bis[(E)-1-(1,3-benzoxazol-2-yl)-2-ethenyl]-1,1′-biphenyl and its substituted derivatives. We have shown that introducing bulky 2,2′-oxyhexyl substituents into the biphenyl units leads to a shift of the fluorescence maximum for the TVD films toward shorter wavelengths, a decrease in their photostability, and aggregation of the films during storage. __________ Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Spektroskopii, Vol. 74, No. 3, pp. 300–303, May–June, 2007.
