ASYMPTOTIC BEHAVIOR OF SOLUTIONS OF NONLINEAR NEUTRAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

The boundedness of the every solution and the asymptotic behavior of all solutions of the nonlinear neutral delay differential equation [x(t) - P(t)x(t - t)]' Q1 (t)f(x{t-σ1))-Q2(t)f(x(t -σ2))=0,t≥t0 are investigated, whereτ,σ1,σ2∈(0,∞), P∈C([t0,∞),R), and Q1,Q2∈C([t0,∞),R), f∈C(R,R). The sufficient conditions obtained improve the existing results in the literatures.     

On the deformation and fracture of porous materials

The constitutive behavior of porous materials (including the yield loci, the void growth rate, the macro stress-strain relation and the strain to localization instability) is examined based on the lower bound approach proposed by the present authors. These results are then compared with the experimental and the finite element results as well as those predicted by Gurson's equations. Emphasis is placed on approaching the real behavior from the upper and the lower bound analysis. Calculation is also made on the influence of void nucleation on the critical strain to instability and a modified strain-controlled nucleation criterion is proposed. Finally the instability and fracture of AISI4340 steel in plane strain tension is examined and comparison is made between theoretical and experimental results.

Novel ethero atoms containing polyesters based on 2,6‐naphthalendicarboxylic acid: A comparative study with poly(butylene naphthalate)

Poly(butylene naphthalate) (PBN), poly(diethylene naphthalate) (PDEN), and poly(thiodiethylene naphthalate) (PTDEN) were synthesized and characterized in terms of chemical structure and molecular weight. The polyesters were examined by TGA, DSC, and DMTA. All the polymers showed a good thermal stability, even though depending on chemical structure. At room temperature they appeared as semicrystalline materials; the effect of the introduction along the PBN polymer chain of ether oxygen atoms or sulfur ones was a lowering in the T_g value, a decrement of T_m, and a decrease of the crystallization rate. Changing in chemical structure also affects the main α absorption associated with the glass transition which moves to lower temperature and whose energetic requirements decrease. The results were explained as due to the presence of highly flexible C? S? C or C? O? C bonds in the polymeric chain. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Eigenvalues of the antiplane-shear crack problem for a power-law material

This paper discusses the problem of finding the eigenvalue spectrum in determining the stress and strain fields at the tip of an antiplane-shear crack in a power-law material. It is shown that the perturbation method provides an analytical dependence of the eigenvalue on the material nonlinearity parameter and the eigenvalue of the linear problem. Thus, it is possible to find the entire spectrum of eigenvalues and not only the eigenvalue of the Hutchinson-Rice-Rosengren problem. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 49, No. 1, pp. 173–180, January–February, 2008.     

Asymptotic behavior of tails and quantiles of quadratic forms of Gaussian vectors

We derive results on the asymptotic behavior of tails and quantiles of quadratic forms of Gaussian vectors. They appear in particular in delta–gamma models in financial risk management approximating portfolio returns. Quantile estimation corresponds to the estimation of the Value-at-Risk, which is a serious problem in high dimension.     

Stress and heat flux stabilization for viscous compressible medium equations with a nonmonotone state function

We study a system of quasilinear equations describing one-dimensional flow of a viscous compressible heat-conducting medium with a nonmonotone state function and mass force. The large-time behavior of solutions is considered for arbitrarily large initial data. In spite of possible nonuniqueness and discontinuity of the stationary solution, we prove L²-stabilization for the stress and heat flux as t → ∞ along with corresponding global energy estimates for them. The new method of proof utilizes a combination of energy type equalities for the stress and heat flux. Consequently, H¹-stabilization of the velocity and temperature along with global estimates for their derivatives are valid as well.
