Ellen Gleditsch: Pioneer Woman in Radiochemistry

We present the life and work of the Norwegian scientist Ellen Gleditsch (1879-1968) in the early era of radioactivity. From 1907-1912, Gleditsch worked as Marie Curies assistant in the Laboratoire Curie in Paris on the alleged copper-lithium radioactive transformation and on the radiumuranium ratio, as well as studying chemistry and related subjects at the Sorbonne. Later,in 1913-1914, she worked in Bertram Boltwoods laboratory at Yale University on the half-life of radium. Gleditsch also was concerned with academic opportunities for women, and she became the president of the International Federation of University Women. As a professor, the second female professor in Norway, she initiated a research group on radioactivity at the University of Oslo.     

The structure of cleomeolide, an unusual bicyclic diterpene from cleome viscosa L. (capparaceae)

A bicyclic diterpene cleomeolide (1) C₂₀H₃₀O₃ has been isolated from Cleome viscosa L. (Capparaceae), and its stereostructure established by chemical, spectral and X-ray crystallographic means. Crystals of 1 belong to space group P2₁ with A = 10.329(2)Å, B = 12.468(3)Å, C= 7.356(2)Å,β = 109.98°, and Z = 2. The structure was solved by a multiple solution procedure and refined by full matrix least-squares to give R = 0.041 and wR = 0.051. Oxidation of 1 gave the ketone 4, which on treatment with methanolic KOH led to a facile transannular reaction to give the lactone 6

The use of the CNDO method in spectroscopy: VII. Changes in dipole moment upon excitation

The results of the calculations of changes in dipole moment upon excitation of some organic molecules are discussed in connection with recent high resolution spectroscopic measurements of the same quantities. Calculations are reported for several substituted benzenes, several azines, and for formaldehyde, propynal, formyl fluoride, difluorodiazirine and azulene. The calculations were carried out within the CNDO/S parametrization scheme.     

Carrier drifttime from pulsed photoconductivity in as-grown trans-polyacetylene

Nanosecond pulsed photoconductivity experiments in as-grown trans-polyacetylene at room temperature are reported. From the decay of the photoresponse the free drift time of photogenerated carriers is found to be τ_fd<10^?9sec. From the amount of collected charge the upper limit of τ_fd is reduced to picoseconds so that the relaxation of electrons and holes into $\text{mobile}$ solitons and anti-solitons is questionable.     

Monte carlo simulation of three-body ion-ion recombination

The extent to which the use of models in discussing spectroscopic measurements of molecular reorientation in isotropic fluids is necessary, and possibly misleading, is discussed by considering the basic conditions imposed by molecular symmetry on reorientation.     

The chemistry of sulfines. 9. A novel synthesis of α-chloroalkyl alkanethiosulfonate esters

Sulfines react with sulfinyl chlorides giving α-chloroalkyl alkanethiosulfonate esters and with thionyl chloride giving α-chloroalkanesulfenyl chlorides, both in good yields.
