MASS TRANSFER EXPERIMENTS ON SINGLE IRREGULAR-SHAPED PARTICLES

Mass transfer from irregular-shaped naphthalene particles (100-200 inn in size) was studitd in an electrodynamic balance. Charged particles were suspended in an electrostatic field directly in line with a calibrated air jet. Mass and size change histories were obtained under ambient conditions, and under steady- and pulsed-flow conditions. For natural convection, the time-averaged Sherwood number was similar to that for spheres. Forced-convection Sherwood number under steady-flow conditions was strongly dependent on particle shape and panicle Reynolds number, and was consistently higher than values predicted for spheres at comparable Reynolds numbers. This study validates the technique and indicates the shape effect on mass transfer form single particles.     

Schinortriterpenoids: A Case Study in Synthetic Design

Since the pioneering days of total synthesis and retrosynthetic analysis, the community has embraced guiding principles for planning synthetic approaches towards complex natural products. These guideposts have enabled the community to synthesize ever more complex compounds by applying prior knowledge gained in new settings. The recently isolated schinortriterpenoid family of natural products has attracted considerable synthetic attention and provided a rich opportunity to evaluate the lessons learned in the construction of complex, polycyclic scaffolds. In this Minireview, a detailed discussion of the synthetic work within this family is provided, including the six reported total syntheses, as well as a comparative analysis of the approaches utilized in their construction.     

Enantioselective Total Synthesis of (+)‐Steenkrotin A and Determination of Its Absolute Configuration

The first enantioselective total synthesis of (+)‐steenkrotin A has been achieved in 18 steps and 4.2 % overall yield. The key features of the strategy entail a Rh‐catalyzed O?H bond insertion followed by an intramolecular carbonyl‐ene reaction, two sequential SmI₂‐mediated Ueno–Stork and ketyl–olefin cyclizations, and a cascade intramolecular aldol condensation/vinylogous retro‐aldol/aldol process with inversion of the relative configuration at the C7 position. The absolute configuration of (+)‐steenkrotin A was determined based on the stepwise construction of the stereocenters during the total synthesis.     

Total Syntheses of Conjugation-Ready Repeating Units of Acinetobacter baumannii AB5075 for Glycoconjugate Vaccine Development

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that causes serious nosocomial infections. One of the multidrug-resistant strains, AB5075, can result in bacteremia, pneumonia and wound infections associated with high morbidity and mortality. The structurally unique glycans on the surface of these bacteria are attractive targets for the development of glycoconjugate vaccines. Here, we report the first total synthesis of the densely functionalized trisaccharide repeating unit of A. baumannii AB5075 as well as two analogues. The construction of 1,2-cis linkages between the rare sugars relies on a double-serial inversion strategy. The judicious selection of building blocks and reaction conditions allowed for stereoselective glycosylations, the installation of acetamido groups and the (S)-3-hydroxybutanoyl chain.
