Given a monotone or convex function on a finite interval we construct splines of arbitrarily high order having maximum smoothness which are “nearly monotone” or “nearly convex” and provide the rate of -approximation which can be estimated in terms of the third or fourth (classical or Ditzian–Totik) moduli of smoothness (for uniformly spaced or Chebyshev knots). The Dirichlet problem for a singularly perturbed parabolic reaction-diffusion equation with a piecewise continuous initial condition in a rectangular domain is considered. The higher order derivative in the equation is multiplied by a parameter ?2, where ? ∈ (0, 1]. When ? is small, a boundary and an interior layer (with the characteristic width ?) appear, respectively, in a neighborhood of the lateral part of the boundary and in a neighborhood of the characteristic of the reduced equation passing through the discontinuity point of the initial function; for fixed ?, these layers have limited smoothness. Using the method of additive splitting of singularities (induced by the discontinuities of the initial function and its low-order derivatives) and the condensing grid method (piecewise uniform grids that condense in a neighborhood of the boundary layers), a finite difference scheme is constructed that converges ?-uniformly at a rate of O(N ?2ln2 N + n 0 ?1 ), where N + 1 and N 0 + 1 are the numbers of the mesh points in x and t, respectively. Based on the Richardson technique, a scheme that converges ?-uniformly at a rate of O(N ?3 + N 0 ?2 ) is constructed. Three types of dispersion equations are analyzed that describe the eigenvalues of the effective refractive index of a multilayer plane optical waveguide and the energy eigenvalues of a quantum particle placed in a piecewise constant potential field. The first equation (D1) is derived by setting to zero the determinant of the system of linear equations produced by matching the solutions in the layers. The second equation (D2) is obtained using the well-known method of characteristic matrices. The third equation has been obtained in the general case by the author and is known as a multilayer equation. Simple relations between the three equations are established. It is shown that the set of roots of D2 exactly coincides with the set of eigenvalues of the multilayer problem, while the roots of D1 and the multilayer equation contain those equal to the refractive index in the optical case (or to the potential in the quantum case) in internal layers of the system, which may be superfluous. The piecewise algebraic variety is the set of all common zeros of multivariate splines. We show that solving a parametric
piecewise algebraic variety amounts to solve a finite number of parametric polynomial systems containing strict inequalities.
With the regular decomposition of semi-algebraic systems and the partial cylindrical algebraic decomposition method, we give
a method to compute the supremum of the number of torsion-free real zeros of a given zero-dimensional parametric piecewise
algebraic variety, and to get distributions of the number of real zeros in every n-dimensional cell when the number reaches the supremum. This method also produces corresponding necessary and sufficient conditions
for reaching the supremum and its distributions. We also present an algorithm to produce a necessary and sufficient condition
for a given zero-dimensional parametric piecewise algebraic variety to have a given number of distinct torsion-free real zeros
in every n-cell in the n-complex.

A high-order Lagrangian cell-centered conservative gas dynamics scheme is presented on unstructured meshes. A high-order piecewise pressure of the cell is intro- duced. With the high-order piecewise pressure of the cell, the high-order spatial discretiza- tion fluxes are constructed. The time discretization of the spatial fluxes is performed by means of the Taylor expansions of the spatial discretization fluxes. The vertex velocities are evaluated in a consistent manner due to an original solver located at the nodes by means of momentum conservation.
