CdHgO2: Ein Oxomercurat mit Verwandtschaft zur Crednerit-Struktur

CdHgO₂: An Oxomercurate related to the Crednerite Structure Single crystals of CdHgO₂ were prepared by oxygen high pressure technique (600°C, 3900 bar) and investigated by X-ray technique. It crystallizes with monoclinic symmetry, space group C–C2/m; a = 5.933, b = 3.452, c = 5.875 Å, β = 91.26°; Z = 2. The Hg²⁺ ions show dumb-bell like coordination, Cd²⁺ an octahedral one. CdHgO₂ shows strong relationship to the Crednerite structure. The orientation of the O? Hg? O dump-bells to the CdO₆ octahedra layers is discussed with respect to related oxomercurates.     

Interactions between octyl-β-D-glucoside and α-amino acids or small peptides

The interactions between octyl--D-glucoside and glycine in water have been investigated by surface tension, viscosity, and density measurements. The results show that the -amino acid causes an unexpected lowering of the critical micellar concentration of octyl--D-glucoside. Such a finding has been interpreted in temss of dipole-dipole interactions between the hydrophilic site of the surfactant and the peptidic cosluttes. From three to seven amino acid molecules have been estimated to be coordinated with each glucoside unity in the micellar state. The research has been extended to glycine oligopeptides and L-lysine. The latter compound has effects similar to those observed with glycine whereas diglycine and triglycine show weaker effects on the micellization process.     

Study of chemical bonds in a-B/C:H films by electron probe microanalysis

This paper describes the study of chemical bonds in amorphous hydrogen rich boron/carbon (a-B/C:H) films by electron probe microanalysis. The films were deposited on Si single crystals by plasma chemical vapour deposition with a precursor-carborane (C₂B₁₀H₁₂) in a laboratory setup. A film thickness and B/C ratio up to a value of 8000 Å and 4, respectively, have been obtained. The analysis of boron and carbon X-ray emission spectra has shown that the nearest order in the films is characterized by the coexistence of C-C, B-C and B-B bonds for B/C 1 and of B-B and B-C bonds for B/C 4. After two years exposure in air the oxygen content in the films increases from 2–5 to 15–20 at.%.

Constrained minima of nonlocal free energy functionals

We consider variational problems involving nonlocal free energy functionals that arise from Gibbs measures with Kac potentials and are related to the characterization of the optimal (i.e., typical) shape of an interface under given constraints on the magnetization profile.     

Surface tension in Ising systems with Kac potentials

We consider an Ising spin system with Kac potentials in a torus of ^d,d>-2, and fix the temperature below its Lebowitz-Penrose critical value. We prove that when the Kac scaling parameter vanishes, the log of the probability of an interface becomes proportional to its area and the surface tension, related to the proportionality constant, converges to the van der Waals surface tension. The results are based on the analysis of the rate functionals for Gibbsian large deviations and on the proof that they -converge to the perimeter functional of geometric measure theory (which extends the notion of area). Our considerations include nonsmooth interfaces, proving that the Gibbsian probability of an interface depends only on its area and not on its regularity.     

On the two-dimensional stochastic Ising model in the phase coexistence region near the critical point

We consider the two-dimensional stochastic Ising model in finite square with free boundary conditions, at inverse temperature >₀ and zero external field. Using duality and recent results of Ioffe on the Wulff construction close to the critical temperature, we extend some of the results obtained by Martinelli in the low-temperature regime to any temperature below the critical one. In particular we show that the gap in the spectrum of the generator of the dynamics goes to zero in the thermodynamic limit as an exponential of the side length of , with a rate constant determined by the surface tension along one of the coordinate axes. We also extend to the same range of temperatures the result due to Shlosman on the equilibrium large deviations of the magnetization with free boundary conditions.
