对比式离心现象实验装置

为了弥补现行教科书中,离心运动的演示实验装置及离心现象产生实质的知识呈现不足,设计了符合学生认知规律的离心实验装置.该装置通过对比2个物体在相同的角速度下产生相反的运动状态,说明物体做离心运动,不是由角速度产生,而是只有合外为突然消失或是合外力不足以提供向心力时,才能产生离心运动.     

Dielectric study on pure and KOH-doped tetrahydrofuran clathrate hydrates

Complex dielectric permittivities of pure and KOH-doped (x = 1.8 x 10^–4) tetrahydrofuran clathrate hydrates were measured in the temperature range 20–260 K and in the frequency range 20 Hz-1 MHz. The relaxation time of the water reorientational motion was found to decrease drastically as a result of the doping; e.g., the relaxation time of the doped sample was 10^–9 times shorter than that of the pure sample at 70 K. The activation enthalpy of the motion was reduced to 7.4 kJ mol^–1. On cooling the crystal, the value of decreased suddenly at the 62 K phase transition to the ₂ value of the pure sample and at the same time disappeared. No dispersion effect due to the guest reorientation was observed below the transition. These data indicate that both the host and guest molecules become ordered or, at least, change their mobility drastically. In the pure sample, a relaxation phenomenon of ₀₂ was found around the glass transition region. The relaxation times agreed well with those derived from the enthalpy of relaxation in a calorimetric study.Dedicated to Dr D. W. Symptomatology of adductor spasmodic dysphonia: A physiologic model

Vocal symptomatology of adductor spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is reviewed critically from historical, epidemiologic, and clinical perspectives. A model of symptomatology of this disorder based on a large patient population, and clinical and physiologic observations is advanced. The model incorporates crucial symptomatic and asymptomatic phonatory and nonphonatory physiologic parameters of laryngeal behavior in these patients. These parameters include vocal fold contact area, vocal fold collision force, glottic compression, and subglottic air pressure. Inappropriate efferent discharges from brain-stem basal ganglia are hypothesized as causing overadduction of the vocal folds in phonation, generating the basic and fundamental vocal symptom of adductor SD—strained, strangled, overpressured voice quality. Cortical loops are implicated as accountable for compensatory vocal behavior, not as the primary site of the disorder. Symptom occurrence, variability, magnitude, effects, and failure of treatment approaches, as well as recurrence of symptoms after ablative or invasive procedures, are explained by this model. The model also predicts that symptomatology of adductor spasmodic dysphonia is unique to this disorder and that symptoms are phonotopically organized. The minimal diagnostic battery based on the model is presented, and it is shown how this battery aids in the differential diagnosis of adductor SD and other phonatory disorders that closely mimic the vocal symptoms of adductor spasmodic dysphonia, including tremor.     

Axisymmetric three-dimensional finger solutions in Mullins-Sekerka equation

In this paper, we study the existence problem of axisymmetricthree-dimensional finger solutions of Mullins–Sekerkaequation. The finger solutions are travelling wave solutionswhose finger-shaped interfaces are moving along a certain directionat a constant speed within a cylindrical domain. The existenceof at least one axisymmetric three-dimensional finger solutionis obtained through a fixed-point argument of the Hilbert transformation.     

The Hyers-Ulam stability of nonlinear recurrences

We show some Hyers-Ulam type stability results for some nonlinear recurrences in metric spaces.     

A strategy for choosing Gegenbauer reconstruction parameters for numerical stability

The Gegenbauer reconstruction method was first proposed in 1992, but in early studies no attempts were made to optimize the relevant parameters of this method. These parameters were allowed to grow proportionally with the number of nodes which, in many cases, resulted in exponential convergence for a selected range of the proportionality constants. Early studies also made clear that very large error bounds could be expected if these key parameters were not chosen carefully. Subsequent studies then pointed out that, although unrelated to the method’s analytically predictable domains of poor accuracy, round-off errors could also sabotage the method’s accuracy. The challenge of successfully implementing a Gegenbauer reconstruction then rests on understanding the performance trade-offs we can expect when choosing the key parameters in accordance with different objectives.In this study, we propose a new strategy for choosing optimal parameters in the Chebyshev-Gegenbauer reconstruction method, specifically to achieve numerical stability. This strategy is based on asymptotic analysis as well as minimization problems in one and two dimensions. The effectiveness of our approach, which could also be applied to a wider selection of polynomials is then illustrated with results from numerical experiments.
