Stable Ergodicity and Frame Flows

In this note we show that all diffeomorphisms close enough to the time-one map of the frame flow on certain negatively curved manifolds are ergodic. As a simple corollary we deduce that the frame flows are ergodic for all compact manifolds with curvature pinched sufficiently close to –1, thus providing results in the case of manifolds of dimension 7 or 8 which were missing from the results of Brin and Karcher.     

1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic study of oxidation of D,L‐cystine and 3,3′‐dithiobis(propionic acid) with hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solution

The oxidation of symmetrical disulfides [D ,L ‐cystine ( 1 ) and 3,3′‐dithiobis(propionic acid) ( 2 )] with hydrogen peroxide in D₂O–NaOH solution (pH 10–11) was studied by NMR spectroscopy. Assignments of the proton and carbon NMR signals of starting materials ( 1 and 2 ) and products of oxidation are based on conventional 1D NMR methods (DEPT, selective spin decoupling). Formation of C—S bond cleavage products or, in case of 2 , partially oxidized intermediates was not detected. The accelerating effect of Cu²⁺ cations, but not Fe³⁺ cations, on the oxidation rate of 1 in basic medium was demonstrated. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

The canonical solution operator of $ {\bar \partial } $ on weighted spaces with holomorphic coefficients

On weighted spaces with strictly plurisubharmonic weightfunctions the canonical solution operator of and the ‐Neumann operator are bounded. In this paper we find a class of strictly plurisubharmonic weightfunctions with certain growth conditions, so that they are Hilbert‐Schmidt operators between weighted spaces with different weightfunctions, if they are restricted to forms with holomorphic coefficients. New efficient catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of ethers

Some nickel, copper, and silver salts or complexes are efficient catalysts for the oxidation of benzylic ethers with oxygen in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. Salts of the weakly coordinating anion trifluoroacetate are particularly efficient, approaching (and, in some cases, improving) the yields obtained with cobalt(II) chloride, the best catalyst so far reported.     

Hausdorff dimension of a random invariant set

The notion of random attractor for a dissipative stochastic dynamical system has recently been introduced. It generalizes the concept of global attractor in the deterministic theory. It has been shown that many stochastic dynamical systems associated to a dissipative partial differential equation perturbed by noise do possess a random attractor. In this paper, we prove that, as in the case of the deterministic attractor, the Hausdorff dimension of the random attractor can be estimated by using global Lyapunov exponents. The result is obtained under very natural assumptions. As an application, we consider a stochastic reaction-diffusion equation and show that its random attractor has finite Hausdorff dimension.     

Impact of Partial Separability on Large-Scale Optimization

ELSO is an environment for the solution oflarge-scale optimization problems. With ELSO the user is required to provide only code for the evaluation of a partially separable function. ELSO exploits the partialseparability structure of the function to computethe gradient efficiently using automatic differentiation.We demonstrate ELSO's efficiency by comparing thevarious options available in ELSO.Our conclusion is that the hybrid option in ELSOprovides performance comparable to the hand-coded option, while having the significantadvantage of not requiring a hand-coded gradient orthe sparsity pattern of the partially separable function.In our test problems, which have carefully coded gradients,the computing time for the hybrid AD option is within a factor of two of thehand-coded option.     

Concerning the multiplicators of Fourier series in the trigonometric system

A Survey on Explicit Representation Formulae for Fundamental Solutions of Linear Partial Differential Operators

In the present article, we aim at treating the existence of fundamental solutions of linear partial differential operators with constant coefficients from the viewpoint of setting up explicit formulae yielding fundamental solutions.     

The 2D Rancieite-type manganic acid and its alkali-exchanged derivatives: Part I — Chemical characterization and thermal behavior

The 2D Rancieite type manganic acid was prepared by reduction of KMnO₄ in acidic medium. Its ion exchange behavior allows to prepare alkali derivatives. All compounds were characterized with use of a combination of X-ray diffraction, chemical analyses, TGA, magnetic measurements and spectroscopic techniques. The evolution of their chemical composition versus temperature was studied between 180 and 400 °C. It shows that the dehydration process is partly reversible in these compounds whereas the weak reduction is irreversible. The 2D Rancieite-type manganic acid is readily different from a Birnessite-type phyllomanganate, as shown by several features: the interlayer distance, the ion exchange capacity, the thermal behavior, the interlayer cation content, the manganese average oxidation state, the magnetic behavior and the IR spectrum.
