Nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate and its sequential block copolymerization with styrene and N‐butyl acrylate

Nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate (DMAEA) was carried out at 100–120 °C, initiated by MONAMS, an alkoxyamine based on N‐tert‐butyl‐N‐(1‐diethyl phosphono‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl)nitroxide, SG1. Controlled polymerization can be achieved by the addition of free SG1 (the initial molar ratio of SG1 to MONAMS ranged from 0.06 to 0.12), giving a linear first‐order kinetic plot up to 55–70% conversion depending on the reaction conditions. The molecular weights show a near linear increase with conversion; however, they deviate to some extent with theoretical values. SG1‐mediated polymerization of DMAEA at 112 °C is also controlled in organic solvents (N,N‐dimethylformide, anisole, xylene). Polymerization rate increases with increasing solvent polarity. Chain transfer to polymer produces ～1 mol % branches in bulk and 1.2–1.9 mol % in organic solvents, typical of those for acrylates. From poly(styrene) (pS) and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (pBA) macroinitiators, amphiphilic di‐ and triblock copolymers p(S‐b‐DMAEA), p(DMAEA‐b‐S‐b‐DMAEA), p(BA‐b‐DMAEA), and p(DMAEA‐b‐BA‐b‐DMAEA) were synthesized via NMRP at 110 °C. Novel optically active 1,3-aminoalcohols derived from D-glucal

Development of a Novel Approach to Formation of a Pyrrole Ring: Synthesis of 2,3,5-Substituted 1-[2-(Vinyloxy)ethyl]pyrroles

Reaction of 2-(vinyloxy)ethylisothiocyanate with unsaturated carbanions generated in situ from propargyl ethers and amines when treated with superbases, after S-alkylation and cyclization of the adducts in the presence of CuBr, leads to the previously unknown 2,3,5-substituted 1-[2-(vinyloxy)ethyl]pyrroles.     

Synthesis and Some Transformations of 2-(3-Amino-1-Phenylpropyl)furan

A preparative method was developed for the synthesis of ethyl furfurylidenecyanoacetate. Its condensation with phenylmagnesium bromide gave ethyl α-cyano-β-(2-furyl)hydrocinnamate, the decarboxylation of which led to β-(2-furyl)hydrocinnamonitrile. Reduction of this nitrile with lithium aluminum hydride gave 2-(3-amino-1-phenylpropyl)furan. 2-(对烷氧基苯甲酸酯基或对烷氧基苯丙烯酸酯基)-5-氧-2,5-二氢呋喃化合物的合成与液晶性质研究

Two series of p-alkoxybenzoates Ia-If and p-alkoxycinnamates IIa-IIf, each species beating one terminal furanone, have been synthesized and characterized by IR, ^13C NMR, ^1H NMR, MS spectra and elemental analysis. The mesogenic properties of both series of furanones have been studied by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）. The relationship between structures and mesogenic properties was discussed. The results show that the increased alkoxy chain length （C7-C12） and the bridging groups between the benzene ring and the furanone ring affected the mesomorphic properties greatly, and the two series of furanones might display monotropic or enantiotropic nematic （N） or semetic C （SmC） mesophases and different mesomorpic phase temperature ranges corresponding to different carbon chain length.     

A Large Conformational Change of a Bridged β-Cyclodextrin Dimer in Aqueous Solution

A novel bridged β-CD dimer in which two β-cyclodextrins were linked by a naphthalene at positions 2 and 7 has been synthesized. 1H and 13CNMR measurements showed that a large change in the conformation of the dimer occurred in aqueous solution. The dimer interacted with methyl and ethyl orange to form stable inclusion complexes via "induced fit" mechanism.
